Dale quiets Matoaca to take District crown

Until this season, Thomas Dale’s Boys’ Volleyball team had never lost a district match. That streak ended with an early season loss to a much more experienced Matoaca team.

“We got beat pretty good that first match, but in the return match, I thought we outplayed them, even though the scoreboard said otherwise. That gave us some much-needed confidence,” said an elated coach Mike Walker after Thursday night’s Central District Championship game. The Dale team, with only four seniors on the squad, certainly felt some pressures stemming from the previous success of Dale teams. The team was certainly discouraged by the regular season losses, but it continued to work toward its ultimate goal of reaching regional play.

Thursday’s final match was all Dale. Matoaca seemed to be a step slow all evening, while the Knights were the constant aggressors in sweeping the Warriors on their own floor. Jake McCall and Jacob LeSueur led the charge, but it was a tremendous team effort with contributions coming from virtually every player.

Matoaca and Dale both advance to Central Region play this week.
