Ayanna Tweedy, L.C. Bird High School senior, signed her letter of intent to accept a four-year athletic scholarship to Bowie State located in Bowie, MD. Tweedy was surround by family and friends during the official signing on Wednesday, March 2. She will be on the school’s track and field team with a focus on the shot put. A stand-out in both track and field and basketball, Tweedy ranked third in the region and was runner-up in the regional meet for shot put. Tweedy’s best record for this year was putting at 35’8”.
“Just because of her work ethic, she will be a stand-out,” said Beth Ligatti, track and field coach. “She is a very hard worker. She is a great student and an All-Academic. She has done wonders in the building.”
Tweedy also serves as SCA president and is involved in community volunteer work. Most of her work is with children. Her selected major is Early Childhood Education with a minor in Pedagogy (the study of the process of being a teacher.) Tweedy had several offers but said Bowie was her first pick. “Bowie was my first choice because it had both my major and minor studies,” she said.
When asked for any advice to her underclassmen she said, “Always push yourself and always go hard.” Tweedy is the daughter of Marlene and Edward Tweedy.
