Chester to host first “Second Thursday Event”

The Chesterfield Center for the Arts Foundation (CCAF) will present its first monthly “Second Thursday Event” April14 at 5:15 p.m. with a performance by The Chancel Choir of Chester United Methodist Church on the Chester Village Green Lawn.

“The idea was just to bring the community together at some kind of social event so that people could get to know one another,” said Howard Corey, a member of the board organizing the monthly events. “We thought it would help bring together people from the Chester area at a nice little social setting so they could get out and enjoy themselves.”

According to Corey, the board wanted to bring community members to the location on a consistent basis through a “non-traditional” Thursday event rather than only once or twice a year like ChesterFest in late September.

Josh Wortham, the music director at Chester United Methodist, said the choir’s 60 voices will perform the Easter Cantata “Grace That Amazes” gospel hymns, southern gospels and ballads for about an hour. “It’s a mixture of music built around the Easter story,” he said.

“I think our church choir represents a fairly diverse mixture of the community and I think it’s a great opportunity for folks just to come together and to share in music and in fellowship,” he said. “It’s an exciting opportunity for our community to take some time away from the busyness of life and enjoy each other’s company.”

Not every “Second Thursday Event” will run under the sponsorship of the foundation, said Betty Matthews, chairman of the CCAF whose main motivation is to promote local arts and culture; nonetheless, community members will “have an awareness of the enjoyment of being on the lawn in the center of the community and it’s really a community gathering,” she said. “It’s a matter of the quality of life that we have and enjoy in this area.”

The first “Second Thursday Event” is free to the public and no registration is required to attend. Other aspects of the event are in the works. The events will run monthly through October. For more information, contact Betty Matthews at 748-8289.
