Local artist to have art displayed during October

Chester resident Katherine Thompson will have her custom portraits in oil, pastel, and pencil on exhibit during the month of October. An opening reception for her exhibit, “Faces of Promise: Portraits of the Young and Young at Heart,” is Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and will be sponsored by the Chesterfield Center for the Arts Foundation.

Thompson, who has studied at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, recently completed the workshop “Portrait Painting from the Live Model” with Canadian portrait painter, Mathew Mancini, sponsored by Art Richmond. She is also a member of Art Richmond and the Chester Artists Association.

“I aspire to capture a moment in time that displays the innocence of childhood, the wonder of learning, and the joy of living,” she said. “I seek to portray the personality of the subject with a carefully selected candid photograph as the basis of each portrait. Though my portraits have included adults, brides, pets, and memorial portraits, I most enjoy the opportunity to paint children. I often take pictures myself as means of getting to know the subject better and to help capture the spirit of his or her personality, though sometimes portraits are commissioned from a pre-existing favorite photograph.”
