Dale’s top golfer commits to Lincoln-Memorial University

Thomas Dale high school golfer Michaela Conway has committed to Lincoln-Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. The senior chose Lincoln-Memorial over West Virginia Wesleyan University.

“Both campuses were beautiful,” said Conway, who visited both schools. “Their academic and athletic facilities are incredible.”

Conway, the only female member of Thomas Dale’s golf team has been one of the top players in the Central Region over the past two years. Conway has four appearances in the girl’s state tournament in each year of high school and became the first female golfer to earn a medal (by placing) in school history and also being named the first female co-captain in school history.

“I have only been able to coach her for two years,” said head coach Dave Duncan. “I was very pleased with how she approached her senior season, accomplishing her goals,” he continued. “She was absolutely instrumental in our Central District title this year.”

Conway took the role of co-captain in stride, helping to motivate her teammates and improving her overall game. Duncan applauds her maturity both on the course and as a young lady, and also considers her to be one of the most talented players he has coached.

“She knows when to take the chance and when to play it conservatively,” said Duncan. “She’s been a big source of motivation for her teammates.”

One of best rounds came in her first medalist match- she shot a -2 for the round and as mentioned, became the first female to do so in Thomas Dale history. Conway went on to medal, several more times.

“It was funny because the only hole I bogeyed all day was the hole my dad watched,” she recalled. “He left right after that,” she laughed.

When Conway isn’t shining on the links, she’s also a bright spot in the classroom. She is an honor roll student and according to Duncan she’s a great student and her teachers adore her. She sports a 3.3 GPA, and has been a member of the All-Academic team since 2010.

“She does not just let life go by,” said Duncan. “She puts effort into everything.”

While Conway is undecided on a major as many high school seniors are, she does have it narrowed down to a short list- communications, education, sports marketing or political science. As for the future and golf- Conway isn’t sure it extends past college.

“As far as anything professional,” said Conway. “Right now I can’t see myself living my life out of a suitcase.”

Conway is another bright spot in a long line of successes for Thomas Dale high school. She is another student-athlete who will play at the next level. For continued coverage of college signings and commitments stay tuned to the Village News.
