Chesterfield educator named regional Teacher of the Year

With stealth and pie, Meadowbrook High and Chesterfield County Public Schools celebrated math teacher Paul Daszkiewicz’s selection as regional Teacher of the Year.

During a morning assembly at the start of school that was billed as a pep rally to focus attention on math SOLs, Daszkiewicz was surprised with the news that he has been named Virginia’s Region 1 Teacher of the Year and is now in the running to become statewide Teacher of the Year.

To celebrate Daszkiewicz’s success, school and county leaders brought pies, flowers, balloons and a banner declaring “creativity + dedication + talent = Paul Daszkiewicz Region 1 Teacher of the Year.” Meadowbrook’s cheerleaders and band added excitement to the event. After the assembly, teachers and staff members enjoyed pie and coffee.

Daszkiewicz began his career as a math teacher 22 years ago at Meadowbrook, where he continues to teach Algebra II, probability/statistics and precalculus. This spring, he was named Meadowbrook’s Teacher of the Year, then Chesterfield County’s High School Teacher of the Year, then Chesterfield County’s Teacher of the Year. A National Board Certified Teacher, Daszkiewicz goes all out for Pi Day on March 14 every year, coordinates Meadowbrook’s annual International Flag Ceremony and sponsors the Interact Club and Model UN Club.

This month’s regional honor makes Daszkiewicz a perfect 10: He is the tenth Chesterfield County teacher to be named Region 1 Teacher of the Year. In addition to Chesterfield County, Region 1 of Virginia encompasses Charles City County, Dinwiddie County, Goochland County, Hanover County, Henrico County, New Kent County, Powhatan County, Prince George County, Surry County, Sussex County and the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Hopewell.

The Virginia Department of Education selects eight regional Teachers of the Year by reviewing information submitted from more than 100 local school systems. This fall, a panel of representatives from professional groups and educational associations will interview the eight regional winners to select the 2013 Virginia Teacher of the Year.
