Falling Creek Ironworks Annual Event to be Held on May 21

The Falling Creek Ironworks Foundation will present its free annual event on Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. This event offers an opportunity to explore the site of America’s first iron furnace, the 1619-22 ironworks on Falling Creek, and to see some of the improvements recently added to the park. Guides will lead tours through the archaeological ruins of the 1619 ironworks. Other activities include exhibits, costumed interpretation, musket militia demonstrations and Native American dancing. Members of the Matoaca High School American Red Cross Club and their family and friends volunteered on Saturday, April 23, at the Virginia Home 5K Fun Walk. This is the seventh year the 5K Fun Walk has taken place and the MHS American Red Cross Club has volunteered each time. The Virginia Home is a private, non-profit that provides nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible disabilities. Carver Middle School’s seventh grade class, to promote healthy lifestyles and to associate fun with fitness, will offer its first annual “I’d Rather Be Crazy than Lazy Challenge” on May 11. Activities will include “Minute-To-Win-It” events, fitness and local history trivia, and 30 second “Road Block” exercises involving all areas of fitness. There is no cost (free for all ages.) Nathan Hoback named Matoaca High Teacher of the Year

Nathan Hoback has been named 2016 Matoaca High School Teacher of the Year. Mr. Hoback, a worthy recipient of this recognition is well known to students and faculty at Matoaca High School. Originally from Roanoke, Virginia, Mr. Hoback earned his undergraduate and Masters from William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is certified to teach Spanish and Mathematics. He has been a member of the Matoaca High School faculty for five years and his current teaching assignments are Spanish 1 and Algebra II. The 2016 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team, on the evening of April 11, was escorted by the Greater Chester Knights and Salle Green Fencing Clubs onto the stage during a Richmond Convention Center event leading up the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.
