CHESTER, VA – Mellow sounds resonated throughout the L. C. Bird auditorium last Saturday. Bridges of critical thinking and teamwork were being built through music for over 20 elementary and middle schools students during a steel drum workshop. Following the two-hour workshop, the young pannists performed in the evening in a steel drum showcase which also featured groups from Longwood University, The Rhythm Project All Stars from Hampton Roads and L. Clark Kent, Wolverine, Supergirl, zombies, an alien, and pirates could be seen roaming Meadowdale Library at last weekend’s Comic Con event. The event tickled the imagination, inspired and promoted creativity. “The planning starts in the summer before the event,” said Kate Denwiddie, one of the organizers of the event, “It takes about nine months to plan.” In its fourth year the local Comic Con event is one of many in cities across the country. Community Emergency Response Team Course Begins April 5

The first morning class of 2016 for Chesterfield popular Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, training is scheduled to begin April 5. The classes will be held each Tuesday morning over eight consecutive weeks, 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m., at Woodlake Swim and Racquet Club. Topics include light-duty search and rescue, fire safety and suppression, basic and advanced emergency care, terrorism awareness, emergency communications and disaster psychology.
