When the Lee family opened Peking Restaurant in the Breckenridge Shopping Center 25 years ago, it was Steve Lee’s mission to continue the tradition of the first Peking Restaurant opened over 40 years ago in Richmond, to provide the finest, most healthful Chinese dining experience, offering delicious entrees using only the freshest produce. “It’s the food,” said Jason Lee, Steve’s son who joined the business seven years ago. “We are different. Dogpound and Barbie

0

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Well, Mattel has come out with their new line of Barbie dolls hoping to boost sales that have been on a decline since 2012. Interestingly after being introduced in 1959 (57-years-old and still looking good), the Barbie line still contributes 27 percent of their total revenue. This year (available sometime in March) they have introduced three new body types in an attempt to present a more “normal/realistic” body to all the little girls who buy and play with these dolls. Now girls can get Barbie in curvy, tall and…

Rosenwald Schools: Educational Events Explore Segregation

0

Between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, the Rosenwald rural school building program proved to be a critical initiative in the effort to provide educational opportunities to African Americans in the South. More than 5,000 Rosenwald Schools, including 367 in Virginia, were built during that time. However, today, it is estimated only 10 to 12 percent of these buildings remain standing nationwide. For the third year in a row, John Tyler Community College and Preservation Virginia will bring together people from all over the Commonwealth who are interested in saving Virginia’s remaining Rosenwald buildings and their histories. Virginia’s…

The population has grown by 150 percent from 134,000 (1979) to 337,000 (2016) and the budget, county personnel and…

Trolleys were the best way to get around

0

Before the automobile became ubiquitous, street cars or trolleys were the transportation of choice. The Richmond to Petersburg trolley paralleled Jefferson Davis Highway and at least one stop covering still remains in Bensley Village. Pictured here is a trolley car as it passed the Bellwood Plantation, now the site of the Defense Supply Center Richmond. Some older local residents talk about some enjoyable evenings on the trolleys.
