M y wife and I just returned from an anniversary trip to Georgia. Our first stop, which was supposed to be our longest stay, was in Tybee Island, Ga. We left Chester immediately following church on Sunday, arriving at our motel shortly after 9 p.m. It was dark, but there were some things that concerned me even though I could not see everything. We checked in and went to our room. Room number 16 to be exact. The access to it was through an exterior wooden stairwell. On the first landing were two chairs with ash trays that were full…

I have offered a few fire station recipes, but I have never done a restaurant review in my column. There are many good restaurants across this land, and I especially like to go to the places that all the locals go, wherever I am. Today was a different experience from the moment that we drove into the parking lot. I am talking about Mission Barbecue, located at Broad and Glenside. The parking lot was adorned with the flying U.S. flag. There was also something that I have not seen in any other parking lot, and that was a “Veterans Only”…

A few weekends ago, I embarked on an adventure with my sweet girl. We went on a camping trip with her Girl Scout troop. I will be honest with you: I was not looking forward to going. I had been camping a few times in my life, but never as an adult with creaky knees and hips. I borrowed a tent, and some sleeping bags, and off we went to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The drive up was beautiful; there is nothing like the gently rolling mountains of Virginia. We arrived at our campsite, and unloaded all of our gear.…

Hello and welcome back to the sad part of the Dogpound. I am typing this letter from my work office because my laptop decided all it wanted to do was crash its memory. It would recalculate…run for a while, and then repeat the process to the point where it was crashing more than it was running. Work is only about 10 minutes from home…so it is no great effort to come in to use my office computer…but my office does lack the amenity of a television or a refrigerator. Sigh! Just shows what lengths I will go through to ensure…

Hello, and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As I mentioned in my last article, I was laptopless…and after a brief stay at the repair center, the man there told me that it worked fine for him. He cleaned off some contacts and sent me home to see what would happen. Well, my laptop worked fine for an hour…then it crashed….then it ran for another hour and down it went again. Not a happy camper. I can use my mini iPad, but I am getting a stiff neck from looking down all the time…and typing anything more…

By having Internet access in Africa, we were able to hear about the horrific shootings in Las Vegas. There are many who offer solutions, like tighter gun control or better screening of certain people in our population. I happen to believe that this problem will not end until the Lord returns and puts away sin once and for all. As good as our law enforcement is, the shooter will always have the upper hand. We need to determine a way to stop the perpetrator or learn how to keep the greatest number of people from getting hurt. Each of us…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful birthday world of the Dogpound. Yep…this old dog just had another birthday… last Sunday. Another notch in the old belt…the only problem is that this belt is getting closer to the end than to the beginning. It does make you sit down and reflect on the past; the good ..the bad..the highs, and the lows. So many dreams have come and gone…never thinking back then, I would be where I am today. I am not complaining..the good Lord has been good to me; I am still working…my health is pretty good….not the industrial…

COMMENTARY: TIME TO NEGOTIATE? It was 1991 and I had taken a consulting job in Israel. Myself and two compatriots from here in Virginia lived and worked together managing the construction of about 600 American-style houses. The Israelis were building houses as fast as they could due to Russia’s Glasnost and the arrival of 12,000 Jews a month into the country. It was 1991 and I had taken a consulting job in Israel.
