CHESTERFIELD — Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Families First, a program of Chesterfield County’s Department of Mental Health Support Services, will host a month-long book and puzzle drive in June. Four donation centers will be set up across the county at select fire stations. Those stations are: Station 11 – Dale, 5811 Iron Bridge Road, North Chesterfield; Station 14 – Dutch Gap, 2711 W. Hundred Road, Chester; Station 20 – Courthouse Road, 201 Courthouse Road, North Chesterfield; and Station 7 – Clover Hill, 13810 Hull Street Road, Midlothian. Chief Steve Silverheels, son of Jay Silverheels (who played Tonto on the Lone Ranger TV show), will be the featured speaker at a June 3 revival service at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, 1201 Blackstone Ave. in Hopewell. At the 11 a.m. service, Silverheels will be preaching and sharing about his life. According to Indian Life Newspaper, Steve’s parents separated when he was young, and he was an alcoholic and drug addict when he got out of the Army. CHESTER – A recent $350,000 donation toward an arts center has brought the facility closer to reality. The Chesterfield Cultural Arts Foundation announced Friday that Donna Meade Dean Stevens and Jayson Stevens made the donation in honor of country musician, TV show host and actor Jimmy Dean, Dean Stevens’ late husband. As a result, a 350-seat theater will be named the “Jimmy Dean Theatre.” The proposed “Baxter Perkinson Center for the Arts” will be located in the Chester Village Green next to the Chester Library. Matoaca High School student Johnathan Simpson gave blood last fall. Virginia Blood Servives will be hosting a “blood mobile” at Matoaca High School from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 21. The vehicle will be parked in front of the Matoaca High School stadium. The community is encouraged to participate. Donors must be 16 or older and weigh no less than 110 pounds. CHESTERFIELD – Each year, Chesterfield County’s law enforcement community joins family, friends and government leaders to remember and honor the brave officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The event is hosted by the Chesterfield County Police Department, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, the Chesterfield County Police Foundation, the Chesterfield County Police Retirees Association and the Chesterfield Fraternal Order of Police. This year’s ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Southside Church of the Nazarene, located at 6851 Courthouse Road.

Chesterfield County has the newest Virginia chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The Chesterfield Courthouse Chapter held its organizational meeting at Magnolia Grange May 5. At the event were state and district officers, organizing members and prospective members of the new chapter. The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. CHESTERFIELD — In cooperation with the Chesterfield County Police Department, the Chesterfield County Public Library will host Ettrick-Matoaca Train Day—a family-friendly event that will include train displays, performances, presentations and indoor and outdoor activities for children. The event is Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Ettrick-Matoaca Library, 4501 River Road. Colonial Heights’ 65th annual Christmas parade is here once again, and the nighttime event will be held Dec. 5 this year. Gray Gaulding, a native of Colonial Heights and a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Driver, will serve as the parade’s Grand Marshal. The parade, started by the Colonial Heights Optimist Club in 1953, is touted as a unique event that draws people from all over the Tri-Cities area.
