At Meadowbrook High School on Feb. 4, students packed the stands and music poured from the loudspeakers as the home team warmed up, preparing to take on rival Lloyd C. Bird High School.

This past weekend’s “super regional” was necessitated by the recent barrage of winter weather in central Virginia, but it was generally well received by athletes and fans alike.
Many local teams and athletes are experiencing tremendous success this season in basketball and wrestling, but the one foe they are having trouble staving off is the snow the area has experienced over the last month and a half.
Andre Coble, Meadowbrook’s “do everything” star, made it official on Feb. 3 by inking his letter of intent to Temple University. No longer the team that was kicked out of the Big East a few years ago, the Owls, under former UVa assistant Al Golden, have established themselves as an up-and-coming power in eastern football. Temple won nine games in 2009, earning a date with UCLA in the Eagle Bank Bowl.
With its quick strikes and slow, agonizing submission holds, mixed martial arts is not a sport for the faint of heart. But, the stamina it demands from its fans pales in comparison to the extreme dedication required of its fighters, two of whom call Chester home.
