Summer boredom setting in? An important part of a healthy as well as entertaining lifestyle, could include learning more about the great outdoors. Recreational opportunities in state parks are endless and easy to see. An entrance fee of five dollars to Pocahontas State Park can entertain a family all day long with scheduled free activities every hour Wednesday through Sunday.
On a recent visit to Pocahontas State Park Nature center, we had the opportunity to meet Griffin, the Corn Snake and learn why a carnivore is named after a vegetable. We also met Larry and Boxie, resident box turtles, and learned the difference between a male and female turtle and how they are different from aquatic turtles.
If you visit during feeding time, you will see one of the largest snapping turtles this reporter has ever seen, known as Snaparilla, snap for its food and their resident snakes swallow something as big as their own heads.
Jared Ress, lead park intrepreter said, “It’s both entertaining and educational, and we welcome your participation.” Feeding time happens each Saturday during the summer.
An example of a Wednesday/Thursday schedule includes: 10 a.m., Backyard Bass at the Nature Center; 11 a.m., Wide World of Watersheds at the Nature Center; 12 p.m., Fun with Field Guides, at the CCC Museum; 1 p.m., Radical Reptiles at the Nature Center and 2:30 p.m., Beauty of Beavers at the CCC Museum.
