In case you need a last minute gift that will give a little extra cheer to the gardener in your life, read on. Many full service garden centers, gift shops, as well as hardware stores have just the perfect tool or gadget that is sure not to overload Santa’s sleigh. Here are a few gifts that will warm the heart of even the Grinchiest of gardeners.

Pruners and saws: Every gardener needs a variety of pruners. Hand pruners, lopper pruners, pole pruners, and snips come in a variety of sizes, colors and handle configurations. If your gardener has enough pruners (never the case), remember they must be cleaned and sharpened. There are numerous sharpening stones and tools available. Pruning saws, especially folding saws, are essential for both ornamental and fruit trees.

Hand tools: Trowels, weeders, cultivators and dibbers are excellent choices for gardeners with small plant beds or patio gardens. They are also essential for container gardening. Larger hand tools such as spades, shovels, hoes, and edgers belong in every garden shed.

Tools with wooden handles need to be maintained as well. Linseed oil and medium grit sandpaper is used by gardeners to treat handles.

Sprayers: From hand held to back pack, from pump up to battery powered, sprayers are available for both home and garden uses. I recommend having different sprayers for different tasks. At a minimum have two and ensure one is just for spraying a complete weed and grass killer.

Tools are not the only last minute gift idea. Gift cards and gift certificates are available at local garden centers and make wonderful stocking stuffers.

Wide brim hats keep the sun away and look good too. Soap specifically for gardener’s hands is a must. Garden books and magazines are always handy reference materials for gardeners. Magazines subscriptions are available and the notification to the recipient can be printed or emailed. Buying a gift, not having to leave your house and no wrapping required…perfect. If you want to be a bit non-traditional, search for garden classes and seminars that are offered. Classes are available in a variety of subjects from basic design, botany, and even backyard bee keeping. A local botanical garden has memberships available for purchase as well.

Larry’s timely tip: Relax and enjoy the blessing of Christmas. Love your family, cherish the memories of those who are gone and create new traditions. God Bless.
