Elswick-SteveSteve Elswick became the chairman of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors last week during the first meeting of the county’s government body.

Without a strike of the gavel, County Administrator J.L. “Jay” Stegmaier brought the Board meeting to order. He took the center seat saying that he would take the place of a regular Board chair until a new chair could be elected. Matoaca District Supervisor Elswick sat next to Stegmaier, ready to take on the chairmanship fo the second year.

Bermuda District Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle, motioned that Elswick take the job as chair. The next motion allowed Ms. Jaeckle to fill the position of vice chair.

“Sometimes you have a change on the Board,” Jaeckle said. “We’re really looking forward to this change and we’d like to welcome our two new Board members, but it’s nice to have something constant, and Steve was a very able chairman last year. I always tell the story that when he ran the first time and I was trying to get support for him, and I said surely if he could be the fire chief, surely he could be on the Board of Supervisors.”

Leslie Haley and Christopher Winslow are new Board members from Midlothian and Clover Hill districts respectively.

Planning commissioner members were nominated and approved. They are: Bermuda District, Gib Sloan; Clover Hill District, Gloria Frye; Dale District, Michael Jackson; Matoaco District, Dr. Edgar Wallin and Midlothian District, Robert “Peppy” Jones.
