The James River Association (JRA) has officially opened registration for its 2020 season of “Connect with the James” programs.
Open to the public, they provide a one-of-kind experience in getting on the water while learning about the history and natural resources of the James River and its tributaries. Opportunities include canoeing, kayaking, and informative outings on the JRA’s education vessel, Spirit of the James.
“Helping people develop an appreciation for the James River, its natural resources, and [as]cultural resources is what the James River Association does best,” said Justin Doyle, JRA’s Community Conservation Manager. “Our Connect with the James programs provide opportunities for people to enjoy the James River in a safe and socially distant manner.”
Highlights of the 2020 season include guided kayak tours of Powhatan Creek in James City County, and guided canoe tours of Turkey Island Creek in Henrico County, They also include a trip on the Spirit of the James to celebrate “The Great Return of the Atlantic Sturgeon” on Sept. 18 and one for World Fish Migration Day on Oct. 24, each launching from Rocketts Landing Marina.
“Current challenges have made the solitude and relaxation of paddling on the James all the more evident,” said Emily Hinson, JRA’s Lower James Regional Outreach Manager. “We’re excited to share this opportunity to explore nature through the Connect with the James programs.”
JRA’s “Connect with the James” programs are made possible by generous support from the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Office. For more information about programs, visit https://thejamesriver.org/whats-happening/connect-with-the-james/.
