Those in search of yummy comfort food were in for a tasty treat Saturday as the Trinity United Methodist Church held their Apple Butter and Brunswick Stew event. This holiday season, Haley Buick-GMC is partnering with the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother Book Committee through a literacy initiative, “Books in Buicks = Bucks.” The book collection program will empower over 1,800 community children, birth through middle school, with literacy. In addition, Haley Buick-GMC will donate to the Christmas Mother program a dollar per book for the first 500 books collected. New children’s books are especially needed because they will be given as gifts. Gently read books also will be used to build and enhance home libraries. A trailer loaded with nonperishable foods, snacks, drinks, paper products, and other household necessities headed to the Vetshouse in Virginia Beach last month. The Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution adopted Vetshouse as their service project during their Fall Forum meeting at the Hilton Richmond Hotel in Short Pump, held over the weekend of Sept. 15 and 16. Ten members of the Bermuda Hundred Chapter attended. The project was suggested by Princess Anne County Chapter Regent Jane Amelon after she visited Vetshouse and realized their dire need for supplies. Pocahontas State Park received a grant award of $15,000 from the Garden Club of Virginia for the Heritage Center Conversion to Discovery Center Project. This award is part of the association’s 2020 Centennial Project, which supports various projects in Virginia State Parks. The park’s project to convert the Heritage Center to a Discovery Center began in March and will be completed in the late summer. With approximately 1.15 million visitors and over 6,000 school students visiting the park each year, a Discovery Center will provide the opportunity for visitors to be exposed to areas of the park in ways they…
