By Del. Carrie Coyner The Virginia General Assembly has reached the halfway point of the 2020 Session. Known as Crossover, this is the point at which the House and Senate exchange legislation and begin to work on the other chamber’s bills.  In a year with so much partisan debate, I have kept my focus on the issues you said impact your family the most: increasing quality jobs in our community, improving our schools, keeping your neighborhood safe with a focus on crime and the drug epidemic, and tackling access and affordability of health care in our communities. This has been…

To the Editor: In response to Diane Merryman’s article about Tumeric she needs to clarify that anyone thinking of taking a supplement needs to discuss it with his or her doctor. The person needs to make sure it won’t interact with medications the person is already taking. If a person is diabetic or on blood thinner (including aspirin) he or she shouldn’t take it due to the interaction between the medications. Martie McKenzie

If your house catches on fire, how will your children get out? Your house catching on fire is bad enough, but add to it that a member of your family could not get out and that makes it even worse. The fire service has been doing pre-fire planning for years. It is high time that we take on this same attitude concerning our family that lives in our home. A fire could occur at any time, day or night. The actions taken by occupants during the day are different from the actions that may be taken at night, especially after…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I am thinking, did I just miss Valentine’s Day again? I did, didn’t I! Darn it! This is what happens when I write articles weeks in advance. Grrrr! Just wants me to stomp my foot. But wait, I cannot do that. Why, you ask? Good question. I had my toenail root cut out, and there will be no stomping or kicking for a few weeks. Not sure why, but in the past five years, ingrown toenails have been a painful thing for me. Several years ago, I finally gave…

By Del. Carrie Coyner I want to thank everyone who took time to fill out my 2020 legislative survey so that I could have a better sense of how the community feels about issues coming before the General Assembly.  Here are a few highlights from your collective responses. The core state government services that are most important to you (in order of priority): (1) Fostering jobs and economic growth; (2) Keeping Virginians safe from crime; and (3) Supporting K-12 schools and higher education. You overwhelmingly responded that our children are taking too many SOL tests and want to see the…

You may be familiar with turmeric as a popular spice in Indian cuisine. It gives curry its yellow color. But did you know that it has antioxidant properties that are showing good results in fighting inflammation?  The most active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, a polyphenol that has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Good news when fighting off the flu this time of year. Polyphenols have been shown to fight free radicals. Those are the cells that cause confusion among otherwise healthy cells. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules without matching electrons. As a result, the complimentary companion signal is…

Every response to an emergency incident requires the appropriate personnel and equipment. On structural incidents, the first alarm assignment consists of three engine companies, one or two truck companies, an ambulance, the tactical safety officer and two battalion chiefs. There is also an additional engine that is dispatched once the incident is determined to be a working incident. In most cases, the initial alarm assignment will be adequate to safely manage the incident. However, some incidents require more personnel or equipment. In this instance, the Incident Commander, requests a second alarm assignment. This assignment may vary from one to two…

Hello and welcome back to the Super Dogpound. The Super Bowl is over, and I have to admit it was one of the better ones. The game went deep into the fourth quarter with either team poised to win the game. Even the referees seemed to hold back a bit allowing the players to actually play the game. My only real beef was the lack of scoring. Based on the talent on both teams I had expected a high scoring game. The halftime was above average. Each year it amazes me how they put all of this together. Must take them…

To the Editor:In this week’s Village News, (Jan. 30) you quoted Sen. Joe Morrissey as uttering, in regard to the massive recent gun rights rallies in Richmond, several statements belittling the voices of the thousands of citizens who made the trip to express themselves and as saying “I was very proud of everyone on both sides.”  For the record, I was present at the rally on the 20th and was very proud of the 20 thousand-plus individuals arrived in the freezing cold to be present.  At least a plurality of those present were also veterans, myself included. I resent the…
