Hello and welcome back to the Dogpound where we are taking a sentimental journey down memory lane. They say the best way to ease the loss of a friend and/or loved one is to recount the good times you had together, and, by doing so, they will never seem to be very far way. One of the other cute things Max did when he was young, besides climbing out of the play pen, he would grab one of my socks out of the bedroom and sleep with it. He always liked to be in the same room with me, and…

In the movie “Big,” Tom Hank’s character, during a meeting at a toy company where he worked, says, “I don’t get it,” about a proposed toy that does not make sense for kids. Sometimes, that is how I feel. I don’t get it. While we, as a county, are working to promote ourselves as either a sports tourism or even historic tourism location, how can we leave the entrances to the county not very well-marked, welcoming people into the county or allowing them to be such a mess in some cases. I just read in the Progress-Index about a project…

To the Editor: A letter from Chris Wiegard that appeared in the Village News was recently called to my attention. Wiegard questions using the Maggie Walker Governor’s School Jazz Band to perform at a political event – the appearance of Donald Trump at the Chesterfield County Republican Committee’s fund raiser in the spring. I hope the band was paid. I also hope there were no Mexican students in the band. Trump’s later comments on Mexicans in this country should be shattering to any such student musicians. The Chesterfield County Democratic Committee paid a musician to perform at its June fund…

Proper blood flow through the body’s thousands of miles of arteries and veins is vital to life. On the other hand, the body must also be able to stop blood flow in instances where blood vessels are damaged. This balance of free-flowing and clotting blood can be manipulated medically to treat diseases in the blood system. The process that leads to blood clotting (coagulation) is complex, involving the blood cells, blood vessel walls and many chemicals traveling in the blood stream. There are medical conditions wherein it is desirable to prevent the blood from clotting (anti-coagulation). You may have seen…

Don’t guess, soil test is one of the many sayings in the garden industry. If you use the same seed, lime, and fertilizer, you can expect the same results. Successful gardening is like anything else in life: it requires planning and following through. It is late July, and the last thing many of you are thinking about is fall fescue grass lawn renovation. Late July and early August are the best times for having your soil tested. Before you can test, you need to collect a sample. You will need a shovel, a hand trowel and a clean bucket. A…

You have read, many times over the need for adequate numbers of properly operating smoke alarms in your home. You have also read about the need to perform exit drills in your home to ensure that everyone wakes up when the smoke alarms are activating. The third thing that I know you have read in my articles is to stay low and go until you get outside to your designated, safe meeting place. These three items should be givens in your family’s home escape plan in the event of a fire. Since some of you think that this will never…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound where we continue the storyline that we started last week. As a reminder, in case you missed the last issue, I had to put my best buddy, Max, to sleep after 14 plus years. It was the best thing for him. Just after Christmas, Max was fully weaned and I was able to bring him back to his new home. Max immediately demonstrated that he was a very smart dog. Since I was working during the day, I decided to get a baby play pen (I know, a little…

Confederate events and philosophies are covered in several areas of the paper this week. Some columns, letters and articles revolve around agreement or disagreement about how history should be remembered today. Sunday was a great day for a car ride in the country so my daughter Marly, her husband and toddler, Linda and I rode Route 6 in Goochland with a particular destination. We traveled to the nice little town of Goochland to see a historic house on the river. The house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is for sale and Marly, Brandon and O’siris…

As I scrolled through Facebook on our rainy Saturday, I was very disturbed by a video that was posted. This video was taken in the Food Lion parking lot on Jefferson Davis Highway. The video showed a scene that will take many straight back to the days of the Civil Rights Movement: trucks, over one hundred, proudly waving their Confederate flags were parked in an effort to – do what exactly I am not sure. Instigate, intimidate, I’m not sure the young people even understood why they were there. It was shocking and horrifying to say the least. I was…

To the Editor: As I get older, I find myself getting crankier and crankier. Chris Weigard’s recent column on Confederate flags and statues fed this condition. He says, stop celebrating Confederate Heritage Month, and call it Civil War Heritage Month. Well, apparently it isokay to have Black History Month and LGBT Month, which annoy many people, but hey, let us compromise. Instead of either Confederate Month or Civil War Heritage Month, how about calling it the War of Northern Aggression Month? And, yes, it is called the War of Northern Aggression for a reason. The North invaded the South to…
