Chesterfield’s Commonwealth Attorney Scott Miles in his office. After two and a half months on the job, Chesterfield’s Commonwealth Attorney Scott Miles believes progress is being made. Democrat Miles, who won a close race over Republican John Childrey in November to finish the final 13 1/2 months of Billy Davenport’s term, was sworn in Nov. 13. Several changes that he touted during the campaign have been made, although it seems likely that he will not be able to accomplish one having to do with increasing treatment options by the time the November election rolls around. Stacey Davenport, a Republican not…

A modified route has been selected for the Nash Road Extension, which would connect Nash Road to Route 10. In October, the county transportation department chose a combination of alternatives 2 and 3, which are the middle and southerly routes, senior engineer Chessa Faulkner said. The modified route also would use the bridge crossing from alternative 1. That bridge crossing is estimated to be $1.2 million or so less than a more southerly bridge crossing that was proposed with alternatives 2 and 3. The result is a road that snakes from the bridge to the connection with Route 10 while…

John Harmon stands outside a building the county plans to sell at Beach Road and Route 10. A county-owned property on the corner of Beach Road and Route 10 may soon become a Chesapeake Bank. John Harmon, the county’s real property manager, said the bank was one of four companies that submitted bids on the property, which is located at 10000 Courtview Lane, south of Beach Road and west of Route 10. Chesapeake Bank was the top bidder at $801,000, Harmon said, noting that a sale is pending. The county purchased the land Jan. 21, 1997 from the state Department…

CHESTERFIELD — A path near Pocahontas State Park has become a designated part of the East Coast Greenway, which aims to develop a biking and walking route from Canada to Key West, Fla. The nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance selected the Woodpecker Road Multi-Use Path because it could provide an essential connection along the 3,000-mile route. This is the first designation for Chesterfield. Additional portions of the East Coast Greenway are being considered throughout the county. “Chesterfield Parks and Recreation is excited to have the Lake Margaret Trail formally recognized as part of the East Coast Greenway,” said Stuart Connock,…

Voting and taxes were on the agenda of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors last week. The supervisors voted unanimously to split five precincts as a result of higher than normal turnout in last November’s election. In addition, the voted 5-0 to advertise the county’s real estate property tax rate at 95 cents per $100 of assessed value. The latter represents the same rate as 2018. The new precincts are Iron Bridge North at the Cultural Center of India, Ridgedale at Swim RVA, Longhouse at Union Branch Baptist Church, Magnolia at Chesterfield Baptist Church and Clover Hill at Clover Hill…

The new Chesterfield school superintendent is asking for a 3-percent raise for teachers and staff and an additional $7.7 million from the county to help fund a proposed $17.5 million budget increase for Fiscal Year 2020. The salary increases alone would cost $12.9 million in the $672.2 million budget. Staff received increases of 2, 3, 2 and 2 percent in each of the past four years. Mervyn Daugherty made the proposal during the school board’s budget work session Jan. 22. The increase would support an additional 54 staff members because of an estimated increase of 520 students. This includes an…

Visitors to Henricus Historical Park and Dutch Gap Conservation Area, including a boat ramp and trails, must pass by Dominion Energy’s coal ash ‘ponds’ to access those sites. A bipartisan agreement was reached in the state Legislature last week to deal with 27 million cubic yards of coal ash. Although House Speaker Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, state Sen. Amanda Chase, R-Chesterfield, and others got behind the deal, Chesterfield supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle questioned whether Henricus would be protected. Dan Genest, a Dominion Energy official, said access to the area will remain open. A Jan. 24 email from Jaeckle asked constituents to…

Carrie Coyner believes in girl power. The 37-year-old Chester resident announced last week that she is seeking the Republican nomination for the House District 62 seat currently held by state Del. Riley Ingram, R-Hopewell. Coyner said she wants to offer “a different voice,” that of a “young female business owner.” Coyner is in her eighth year representing the Bermuda District on the Chesterfield school board. Ingram said he is not running again. “He’s done an amazing job,” said Coyner, a business and real estate attorney and the daughter of George and Darlene Emerson. Ingram said he is supporting Coyner and…

Later this year, Chesterfield supervisors likely will consider approving performance agreements in an attempt to lure business to the northern Jefferson Davis corridor. County Planning Commissioner Gib Sloan spoke about the development tool during the Jefferson Davis Association’s luncheon last week at Bensley Community Center. Sloan said some developers prefer performance agreements. These entail a rebate of real estate taxes over a 5-to-10-year period. “The percentage refunded goes down” each year, he said, adding that the county would not have a long-term financial obligation. The performance agreement proposal is part of the work of the North Jefferson Davis Special Area…
