Chesterfield County is offering a hands-on approach for citizens to learn about local government and tour county facilities. Registration is open for the new Government Citizens Academy, which begins next month. In what looks like good news for home owners in Chesterfield County, Dr. Joseph Casey, Chesterfield County Administrator, indicated that the 2017 proposed budget, while staying consistent with the last couple of years, could lead to a reduced real estate tax rate within the coming years. Currently the rate stands at $.96 per $100 of assessed value of a residence. The real tax rate could drop slightly by $.01 to $.95 according to Dr. Casey. “If we can position the county at some later year we would like to return to a pre-recession rate,” Casey said. The Virginia Fire Chiefs Association today recognized Chesterfield County Fire Chief Edward “Loy” Senter Jr. with its highest honor, the Glenn A. Gaines Leadership Legacy Award. Senter accepted the award while attending the Virginia Fire Rescue Conference in Virginia Beach. The award is named for former U.S. Fire Administrator and Fairfax County Fire Chief Glenn Gains, an icon in the fire-services industry. Senter was selected from a pool of nominees, which can include any current career or volunteer firefighter in Virginia. A local man has requested that the speed limit of a zone on Chester Road north of Route 288 be changed from 55 miles per hour to 45. “A request to reduce the 55 MPH speed limit was submitted through the Chesterfield Residency office via Chesterfield County,” said Jesse Smith, director of the Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) department. “Mr. Joe Anderson felt that the speed limit should be reduced due to the presence of a fire station, several ‘blind’ driveways, close railroad crossings on intersecting streets, flooding and poor drainage, school bus stops and construction of houses nearby.” The…
