How many washers will six pieces of spaghetti spanning two cups hold? This is a good question, and it’s one Bruce Peterson asks his “Geometry in Construction” class at Carver College and Career Academy, where he has been teaching for the last five years. Until this year, Patterson has been teaching construction trades, and geometry was only a side subject, taught in a small room off the carpentry class, to teach carpentry students the geometry needed to square a wall or cut a rafter. The Chesterfield County School Board on July 12 adopted a prototype design for the four elementary schools that will be built in the next 32 months. Using the same design for multiple schools will save money and time as Chesterfield County Public Schools moves forward to build a new elementary school (Creekside) in the Midlothian District and build replacements for Beulah, Enon, and Matoaca elementary schools. School start times could change if several pieces fall into place. The Chesterfield School Board could be swapping elementary and high school start times but it may take some time to implement. After some grappling, CCPS has settled on a plan to swap high school and elementary school start times, shifting the elementary school start time by 25 minutes. Lane, a former Chesterfield County school administrator, as the next superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools.
