In 2013 a Referendum was approved by voters to either replace or renovate 11 schools and the school administration building. While initially the projects were spread over a nine-year period, the projects now extend only seven years. “Our school projects are remaining the same, the schools in the original CIP (Capital Improvement Program) that were in years 8 and 9 have been moved up to be completed in the 7 year time frame. The condensing of projects does not put any projects in our area further behind,” said Carrie Coyner, Bermuda District School Board Member. “My focus right now is…

BWP will seek a successor to Dr. Marcus Newsome, who announced in the fall that he would retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year. The search will include a lengthy period for public input, including a survey available to all residents and a number of community forums. An online survey…

Fees seem to be increasing every year: extracurricular activities, buses for sports teams, class supplies and Chrome Books to name a few. Will you work to lower or eliminate fees for students? JOHN ERBACH (DALE) While I don’t believe it is possible to eliminate fees altogether, we need to be flexible so that all children have the opportunity to participate in these programs. Flexibility means that principals have the discretion to offer payment plans, scaled fees tied to income levels, and fundraising opportunities on a case-by-case basis. In appropriate circumstances, principals may be permitted to waive fees altogether for families that…
In the redistricting process do you suggest community/school meetings for comments on drawing proposed district lines and work to eliminate financial segregation? JOHN ERBACH (DALE) Absolutely—I plan to hold community meetings at every school in the Dale District ahead of any decision on redistricting. This is an emotional issue for many since people feel a sense of attachment to their school. The School Board has hired an outside consultant to prepare an independent report on the subject, and I think that was the appropriate thing to do at this time. I suspect that the report will propose district lines that make…
Washington politicians do not have to listen to constituents. Virginia politicians stay out of site on off election years, but local county supervisors make decisions that matter to you immediately. They can be convinced by their constituents on how to vote, and you can reach them by phone and actually talk to them, not an aid. But you have to vote, you have to know the issues, and you have to vote. Supervisors and School Board members are elected every four years so you may want to do a little homework and find out how they stand on the issues.…
John Erbach, a local business lawyer, recently announced his candidacy for the Chesterfield County School Board to represent the Dale District. “I am proud to send my four daughters to Chesterfield County Public Schools, and I want every member of our community to have pride in our public education system,” said Erbach. “As a parent, I meet with their teachers on a regular basis. As a business leader, I understand the value of education, and as a community leader, I know the importance of tapping into the substantial resources we have in Chesterfield.” Mr. Erbach acknowledges the issues facing Chesterfield…
The Chesterfield County Purchasing Department today announced a notice of award to SSC Service Solutions for custodial services during the 2015-16 school year. The notice was made after a six-person evaluation committee recommended that Chesterfield County Public Schools negotiate a contract with SSC Service Solutions. A contract with the national cleaning firm is expected to take effect at 41 Chesterfield County schools on July 1, is projected to save Chesterfield County Public Schools $3.6 million next year and includes the eight schools currently being served by GCA Services Group. Negotiations with SSC Service Solutions were designed to support current school…
