Two years ago, with the help of genealogist Sahara Bowser, Jim McKnight penned and released “My Story of a Sharecropper’s Life,” a book about the life of his grandfather. McKnight wrote the book to have history available to his grandfather’s descendants, and he wanted to maintain the legacy in writing for the younger people in his family who didn’t have the privilege of talking with him at past family reunions. ‘Don’t Be An Accidental Drug Dealer’ campaign urges proper disposal of unwanted or expired medications Prescription drug abuse is a national epidemic, and drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. Through the month of March, Chesterfield County is promoting the proper disposal of expired or unused medications through its “Don’t Be An Accidental Drug Dealer” campaign, which provides free medication disposal pouches for pick-up at various locations throughout the county. Brennan McCarney Brennan McCarney, 16, will embark on a U.S. tour with the internationally-renowned ensemble Celtic Angels Ireland as a member of the Celtic Knights Dance Troupe through the entire month of March. The Chester resident is a world-ranked Irish dancer from the Heart of Ireland School in Midlothian. Brennan began studying Irish dance at the age of 8. He has several national titles along with placing third in the Irish dancing world championships. Brennan has performed in England, France, Germany, and Belgium, as well as on the show “America’s Got Talent.” This past fall, he was a featured Irish dancer with Kings…

Although eight of 10 members of Chesterfield County’s delegation in the General Assembly reached an apparent consensus in January on the nomination of a replacement for Circuit Court Judge T.J. Hauler, two state delegates who did not participate in the process may thwart the majority. According to a Feb. 24 report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Dels. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved an annual increase in the curbside recycling fee during their Feb. 19 meeting. The action came as part of the consent agenda and will result in an annual fee of $40. It will go into effect June 5. The old rate was $25 a year. Clay Bowles, the county’s director of general services, said that the $15 annual increase takes into account an expected 3-percent decline in enrollment. It also factors in annual increases of two percent in the Consumer Price Index. The county recycles over 14,000 tons a year, Bowles said. Utility…

On Feb. 18, the Chesterfield County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of a conditional use permit for a 199-foot communications tower northwest of Route 10 and Jefferson Davis Highway. The site at 2710 W. Hundred Road is on 1.8 acres east of Rock Hill Road, west of Jefferson Davis Highway and north of West Hundred Road, behind Cole Real Estate. The applicant, Karina Fournier, agreed to 11 conditions, which were supported by county planning staff.
