The Chesterfield County Public Library is hosting the Artisans’ Bazaar, an annual event featuring 33 local artisans who will display and sell their work. Some of the custom-made items include handcrafted jewelry, pewter figurines, soaps, photography, watercolors, and crocheted items. The event is a fundraiser for Chesterfield County Public Library, LaPrade Library Friends’ group. Misi Rose has found her calling. She is the Operations Director and Volunteer Coordinator for Mercy Mall, a nonprofit organization in Chesterfield that provides clothing, household items, and baby gear for families in need. Rose began her journey with Mercy Mall as a volunteer, and worked two part-time jobs. When the nonprofit gained more community support and offered her a part-time position, she knew it was where she needed to be. “I prayed with my family over the decision to quit the other jobs and take on more responsibility,” she said. The Country Club of Petersburg hosted a private screening of the documentary “The Hello Girls,” Saturday, Nov. 16. Directed by James Theres, “The Hello Girls” is an award-winning documentary that sheds light on the women soldiers of World War I, who expertly operated the telephone switchboards under Gen. John J. Pershing. A weakness of the United States Army was the telephone operator scheme. This led to the Army running a newspaper advertisement recruiting women to become telephone operators. Tommy Norment, R-James City County, as minority leader, and, as a result, would not caucus with the Republican Party when the Legislature convenes in January. Dominion Energy and Chesterfield County officials met with some local residents of the neighborhoods close to the utility’s power station and Henricus Historical Park on Nov. 14. The purpose of the meeting was to provide residents with an update about plans to recycle coal ash, including options for relocating a boat ramp from Dutch Gap to the James River Conservation Area near Falling Creek Ironworks Park and creating two bridges that would provide access to Henricus and the Dutch Gap Conservation Area. By a 4-1 vote with Carrie Coyner dissenting, the Chesterfield school board on Nov. 12 requested authorization from the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors to spend $4.5 million in county reserve funds and $3.8 million for increased student growth.
