Former attorney and state legislator Joe Morrissey hugs a supporter during a April 3 campaign event at 4000 Jefferson Davis Highway. Morrissey – who started a radio talk show late last year that broadcasts from a studio in Chester – is challenging District 16 state Sen. Rosalyn Dance in the Democratic primary. Morrissey said Dance has taken over $32,000 from Dominion Energy, and he pledged to not accept any money from Dominion or any other corporation. Ann Robbins, on left, and Nancy Byrd at their college graduation in 1954. Ann Robbins, on left, and Nancy Byrd reminisce about their teaching career, college days and marriages. The women have been taking daily walks together for 55 years. (Radiant Snapshots) “We knew each other before we knew our husbands,” Nancy Byrd said of her friend, Ann Robbins. “So it’s funny that Nancy married a Byrd and I married a Robbins,” Ann said, pointing out the avian connection to their married names. But their strikingly related surnames are not the only thing the two women have in common. Both…
From left: Dorothy Jaeckle, Julie Miller, Barbara Micou, Peggy Gordan, Marilyn Orange, Hazel Taylor, Diana Gunn, Janie Hughes, Susan Murman and Arline Ripp. The Woman’s Club of Chester hosted their annual fashion show Saturday, April 6, at Chester Baptist Church. The outfits were provided by Peebles Department Store of Colonial Heights, as they had prior years. A local nonprofit, Fishes and Loaves, catered the event, and 62 door prizes, raffles, and a silent auction kept guests and members busy as the models prepared themselves to walk the 50-foot walkway between guests’ banquet tables. “We’ve been doing a fashion show of…
A section of ‘Alex and Apollo’s Treehouse.’ A portrait of his Steve Harris’ son, Alex Harris, with his abstract painting. Steve Harris Steve Harris gets his art inspiration from dreams and current events, with almost all of his drawings and sculpture telling a story. Those stories will be on display at his show “19 Sculptures and Nine Drawings” at the Petersburg Area Art League Gallery this month. “Each piece I do tells a story, sometimes more than one story,” Harris said. One sculpture that was part of a healing process for him – “911” – took 600 hours to carve…
Desert Storm veteran Kathy Tilbury and Koa. Chester resident Kathy Tilbury, U.S. Navy retired, recently received an assistance dog from Canine Companions for Independence. Tilbury was matched with Koa II, a 3-year-old lab/golden retriever cross who was trained to respond to over 40 commands. Koa can turn light switches on and off, open and close doors and retrieve dropped objects. However, one of his most important jobs will be to provide constant companionship. Tilbury and Koa recently returned to Chester after completing Canine Companions’ Team Training class, an intense, two-week course held at the organization’s Northeast Regional Center in Medford,…

Dominion Energy recently announced that it retired two units at the Chesterfield Power Station. “We had placed these units into cold reserve last year,” Dominion spokesman Dan Genest said, noting the units were placed into the environmentally-safe shut-down status because they were older, smaller, less efficient units that the utility said could not compete with natural gas and solar alternatives. Retiring the units means they cannot be brought back into service. “We decided to retire them now because we did not foresee the energy market changing,” he said. “There were no implications for employees as a result of the retirements.…

Olivia Mullins as Margo and Ian Page as Billy Cane in ‘Bright Star,’ playing at 17401 Jefferson Davis Highway. (Photo by Robyn O’Neill) I don’t know if “Bright Star” would play well in Peoria, but I have an idea that central Illinois residents would love it. The musical – which is based on the life of William Helms, a 5-day-old baby who was tossed from a train in a small valise in 1902 and survived, a sort of a modern-day Moses – is showing on Fridays, Saturdays and select Thursdays at Swift Creek Mill Theatre through May 11. I watched…
Jared Dieffenbach and Kevin Sutton play Friday, March 29. If you ever find yourself in a pickle, you might just be having fun. A group of 33 or so mostly senior citizens regularly join to play pickleball. The game was invented on Bainbridge Island west of Seattle in 1965 and has begun to catch on locally, said Chester resident Daryle Hurt, who helped organize pickleball games at his church, Swift Creek Baptist, five years ago. The game – which features a paddle made of graphite, fiberglass or a composite material and a ball similar to a wiffle ball – has…
