CHESTERFIELD – Six Chesterfield County Public Schools students recently received top honors for their entries in a regional essay and art contest, “Working Together We’ll Sow the Seeds of Peace,” sponsored by the DuPont Spruance plant to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Falling Creek Middle students swept the essay category for middle schoolers. Jamaal Goodson received the top honor in the essay contest, while Chasity Elise Ford and Andre Yarbrough were awarded second and third places, respectively. The Falling Creek Blackhawks 11-U basketball team won the Chesterfield Basketball League championship in the Minor PAC 10 division on March 3 with a 38-25 win over Ettrick. The team was coached by Andrew Lewis, who played at Thomas Dale High School in 1977-78 and is in the school’s Hall of Fame. The assistant coach was John Matthews and the statistician was John Sulimay. Lewis also coached at L.C. Bird for a number of years. CHESTER – It’s spring and the spring fashions are in. The Woman’s Club of Chester has scheduled its annual spring fashion show and luncheon April 7. A disagreement over the funding needed to review video footage from body cameras worn by police escalated to the state Legislature, with two officials disagreeing over the likelihood of success for legislation that would mandate that Chesterfield and other counties specifically provide funding for such. The conflict came to light with local Commonwealth’s Attorney William Davenport’s Feb. 20 letter to Chief General District Court Judge Pamela O’Berry in which he notified her and other county officials that his office would no longer prosecute misdemeanor crimes as of May 1. It was laughs and smiles all around as Stewart and Helen Rex celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary last week. The couple, who were married March 11, 1944, were honored with a vow renewal ceremony at Lucy Corr Health Care Center. The event was a surprise for Stewart, whose humorous comments throughout brought levity to the situation. Stewart, 98, has lived at the Lucy Corr Nursing Home for five years, according to his daughter Darlene Rex-Roberson. Her mother, Helen, 99, still lives with her in Powhatan. By Caleb M. Soptelean Plans are in the works to bring two warehouses to Chesterfield County in the near future. They would be located on Bellwood and Willis roads, county officials say. Devon USA is planning a state-of-the-art facility for the James River Logistics Center on Bellwood Road, said Tina Shreve, a senior project manager with the county planning department. The planned 321,000-square-foot building could be increased to 500,000 square feet depending on the user’s needs, she said. CHESTERFIELD – The Economic Development Authority of Chesterfield County announced Monday the filing of a detailed update of their rezoning application for a large, advanced manufacturing facility expected to bring significant new tax revenue and thousands of well-paying jobs to the county. An economic analysis performed by Mangum and Associates found the project would be a major economic driver for the county for years to come, including: 6,777 to 13,555 total full-time equivalent jobs benefitting from the project (2,000 to 4,000 direct jobs); $5.5 million to $10.9 million a year in new tax revenue to Chesterfield County; $4.1-8.2 billion in…

Billy Phillips said his final goodbyes to friends and families during a special celebration following the Chester Cotillion’s formal dance Feb. 24. Phillips taught thousands of seventh- and eighth-graders ballroom dance skills and etiquette over his 60-year career. CHESTER – Elena Brancato wants to be a role model for her son, so she decided to pursue a new career with the help of John Tyler Community College. Brancato says she chose Tyler because she liked its supportive environment. Her story is just one of several that John Tyler Community College students shared with state legislators during this year’s legislative session. The students were accompanied by college president Edward “Ted” Raspiller on trips to the Virginia Capitol. Brancato wants to challenge herself and realize new successes in the workforce.
