The Virginia State Police (VPS) EMS Med-Flight program, was brainstormed by Chesterfield Fire and EMS Chief Bob Eanes (now retired) and former Governor Gerald Baliles. The helicopters, with a staff of brave pilots, paramedics and nurses have saved thousands of lives since its inception in 1984. The helicopter originally was based at Fire Station 14 on West Hundred Road, stored in the fire station bay. Two-year-old Nikolette Stewart was recovered from an inlet of the James River last week after she slipped and fell into the water. Her father exhausted attempts to save her and the Chesterfield County dive team found the small child about 15 feet from a trail walkway and pier. The trail was located in the Dutch Gap Conservation Area. The Conservation Area is just south of Dominion Power. The Chesterfield County Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded Thursday, August 6, at 12:09 p.m. to the 2700 block of Martingale Road for the report of an apartment fire. Fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from the front door of the apartment. Fire crews entered to find a fire in the kitchen. It took crews approximately fifteen minutes to get the fire under control. The apartment suffered moderate damage especially in the kitchen where the fire started. County firefighters are riding in style, a new paint and body style that comes with the delivery of several new fire engines and four new tankers. The units aren’t just for oohing and aahing over, but are fulfilling a specific need in the county. The engines, according to fire officials cost $599,000 each, and the tankers cost $350,000 per vehicle. A general scale of apparatus cost can be from around $500,000 to one million dollars or more, depending on the type and size of the vehicle.
