Members of the Matoaca High School (MHS) American Red Cross Club and their families and friends recently volunteered at the Virginia Home 3 Mile  Fun Walk. This is the sixth year that the Fun Walk has taken place, and the MHS American Red Cross Club has volunteered each time. The Virginia Home is a private non-profit that provides nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible disabilities. Members of the Matoaca High School American Red Cross Club volunteer every week throughout the school year at Colonial Heights Elementary schools. This is a group of students who, in addition to their academic and other extra-curricular responsibilities, are very much committed to serving the community.  This year, as a group, they accumulated a group total of 707 hours of tutoring. The top three volunteers were: Shani Samuels, Chaniece Williams and Amber Marshall.

Tracy Katherine Cole of Chester graduated summa cum laude from Christopher Newport University and was recognized by President Paul Trible for her 3.98 GPA during commencement exercises, ranking her No. 3 in the class. The 89th Commencement, where CNU graduated its largest class of more than 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students, was held on the Great Lawn of the campus in Newport News, Va., on Saturday, May 9. G.W. Carver Middle School’s library program was awarded the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) Library Program of the Year.  This is a state award that recognizes a School Library Program which is fully integrated into the school’s curriculum and as such is central to the learning process. Librarians Debbie Floyd and Stephanie Stargardt are the librarians at Carver and will be recognized at an awards dinner in the fall in Williamsburg, Va.

Chesterfield Community High School is changing and in a major way. College and Career Academies combine the best of traditional academic instruction and vocational education in preparing students for both college and careers. Community High School has been a school, which helps students who have fallen behind or are at risk. Soon to called an Academy much like Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) specialty centers, it will provide students with information about areas of interest woven into their traditional coursework, making school more relevant to them.
