During a recent Chester Lions Club meeting, Retired Army Maj. Gen. Merdith “Bo” Temple shared his insights into the life and accomplishments of George Washington.  The information Temple shared focused on Washington as a farmer, an innovator, and someone concerned with building the nation through commerce and trade, information  frequently left out of history books. Washington was primarily home-schooled and self-taught as a surveyor who inherited Mount Vernon, where initially tobacco was grown.  In 1753, Washington joined the battles of the French and Indian War on the northwest frontier, where he acquired much of his military acumen.  After the war,…

How many washers will six pieces of spaghetti spanning two cups hold? This is a good question, and it’s one Bruce Peterson asks his “Geometry in Construction” class at Carver College and Career Academy, where he has been teaching for the last five years. This year he has teamed with the school’s geometry teacher to offer this new course. Students…

What would happen if lower income families with students in school if those families had a chance to choose a school for their child in the Chesterfield system? Currently we know that schools in areas with families of lesser incomes have children with less opportunities and poor grades. It is not just holding your thumb in the air and testing the wind, it is a demographic truth. There are two ways a voucher system could work: the school system would allow each student an allowance, say in Chesterfield $7,500, and that voucher could be applied to any school in the…

The Chesterfield County School Board on July 12 adopted a prototype design for the four elementary schools that will be built in the next 32 months. Using the same design for multiple schools will save money and time as Chesterfield County Public Schools moves forward to build a new elementary school (Creekside) in the Midlothian District and build replacements for Beulah, Enon, and Matoaca elementary schools. The construction is part of the bond package approved by Chesterfield County voters in 2013. Nine companies submitted design proposals, and RRMM Architects won the contract with a one-story design of almost 85,000 square…

School start times could change if several pieces fall into place. The Chesterfield School Board could be swapping elementary and high school start times but it may take some time to implement.
