By Jamal Davis In recent years the Matoaca baseball program has developed a tradition of having a good number of its athletes continue to play at the next level. Senior James Womack is no exception. This past week Womack, a 6-2, 170-pound pitcher, committed to Randolph-Macon College, where he plans to continue his playing career. Last season for the Warriors, Womack did a little bit of everything. He was described by his coach as being a “utility” or “multi-purpose” type of player because of his ability to switch positions and still thrive while doing so. He was named second team…

Young talent from the 804 once again finds its way into the collegiate level. Nicholas Griffin, a rising senior pitcher, announced earlier this week that he plans to attend Virginia Wesleyan College. Why did Griffin decide on a school for Thomas Dale as early as before his senior year? “I toured the campus and loved it, and the coaches seem like great coaches from talking with them, and I really liked them,” Griffin explained. “All of those positives factored into my decision.” In his first year on varsity last season, the 5-foot-8, 135 pounder, appeared in seven games as a…

The local baseball commitments, like a good poker hand, seem to be coming in pairs. And the good news is they are being dealt earlier too. Two outstanding athletes, Thomas Dale’s Evan Lester and L.C. Bird’s Trey Ramsey, announced their respective commitments to the colleges where each one plans to play. Lester, a 5-foot-10, 145-pounder, declared he will continue his playing career at Hampden-Sydney College after his senior season in 2017. When asked why he made his decision as early as before his final year, Lester said, “I had taken a tour about a year back and absolutely loved the…

“Sometimes to go forward you’ve got to go to the depths of your own personal despair and claw yourself back,” former Scottish soccer player and manager Gordon Strachan once said. “From that point, no matter what happens, you know you can do it.” While there’s much work to be done to reach the ultimate goal, former L. C. Bird baseball standout (Class of 2011) Nick Conner achieved a part of his dream when he made his professional debut on Father’s Day for the short-season Class A Auburn Doubledays, a minor-league affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Conner entered the game in…
