UNC guard and former L.C. Bird basketball star Kenny Williams underwent surgery last Thursday for a torn meniscus. The surgery came just three days after UNC lost in the National Championship to Villanova, a game in which Williams did not play. The sharpshooter averaged 4.1 minutes per game and scored 23 points on the year including a three pointer against Pittsburgh in the ACC Tournament. Williams will be out 6-8 weeks, but will return in time for preseason practices, looking to work himself into a larger role next year.

Obediah Stith, a tough guard for Matoaca picked up his first college offer to play at the next level. The offer came from Bluefield State College in West Virginia. “It was truly a blessing,” Stith said. “Hard work does pay off.” The senior played mostly point guard for Matoaca, but showed a touch for getting baskets, finishing second on the team in scoring behind junior and division I recruit Terrence Whitfield. A tough guard with a good body for the paint, Stith displayed good toughness throughout the season. In addition to his skills off the dribble, he also possesses solid…
Despite a valiant come back attempt in the fourth quarter, L.C. Bird fell to Potomac in the 5A state championship. The title was the second in three years for Potomac. Charles Falden made his name even more known as he almost single handedly took the game over, scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter, 17 over the last 2:30, including a stretch of 12 points in just 57 seconds of game clock. The unsigned senior shot 14-22 from the floor, 3-4 from three-point land and 4-5 from the charity stripe, adding seven rebounds. He finished with a season high 35…
Following his 35-point performance in the state championship game against Potomac, L.C. Bird senior guard Charles Falden picked up his second offer from Mount Olive College in North Carolina. This offer comes after the an offer from Virginia Union on December 30. Falden’s development took off following a stint on junior varsity where he averaged 25 points per game as a sophomore. A tough guard who can score off the dribble and that possesses a dominant mid-range jumper. He recently took his SATs, with qualifying scores and it is possible that Falden will receive a flurry of offers, possibly from…
Per coach Leon Gholson, Thomas Dale girls basketball guard/forward Jazlyn Eastling recently announced her verbal commitment to Division III Averett University in Danville. Eastling was not a big scorer for the Knights, at about four points per game, but a solid work ethic allowed her to snag seven rebounds per game. Another calling card for Eastling are strong defensive skills, something that Gholson instilled in his team all season long. Thomas Dale lost in the Conference 3 championship game to Cosby, 61-42 before traveling to Woodbridge in the 6A South region tournament, falling 67-53. The region appearance was the first…
Matoaca alum and current Delaware State point guard Devin Morgan had quite the freshman season. So much so, that he took home conference Rookie of the Year honors for the MEAC. A rebuilding program, the Hornets struggled to a 7-25 record, picking up five conference wins in 16 attempts. Morgan, however is sure to be a building block to the team’s future successes. The former Warrior led the team in scoring at 12 points per game, also leading Delaware State at three assists per game. Morgan still displayed strong shooting beyond the arc, connecting on 35.4 percent of his three-point…
Virginia Tech on Haskett’s trail Excitement for Virginia Tech basketball is reaching levels it has not in years after Buzz Williams’ improvement of the program from a cellar-dweller to a bubble team for this year’s NCAA tournament. Excitement for the program may be at its highest; a high point this past weekend as the Hokies upset No. 7 Miami to finish the ACC regular season campaign with an exclamation point. The gregarious Williams has been spotted in the area recently watching L.C. Bird guard Mario Haskett. Haskett’s recruiting exploded last summer and has continued a gradual climb into schools in…
When Andrew White Sr. started playing basketball, it was probably reminiscent of the opening scene of Space Jam. In the 1950s, White Sr. played semi-competitive basketball in King and Queen County on dirt courts. At the time, he did not have an idea of what he was starting. Later, he became a reverend and the namesake for Petersburg’s football stadium and the Community Center at Zion Baptist Church. Now a well-known figure in the community, Rev. White got the ball rolling on an impressive lineage of basketball talent that eventually rendered Andrew White III (Nebraska) and Andrien White (UNC Charlotte).…
Before the 2015-2016 season started, the outlook was looking very bright for Thomas Dale. They returned every main component of their team and were looking to improve on the previous season’s 9-13 record. Monique Jones was the team’s leading scorer last year, returning for her junior year ready to pick up where she left off. Forward Kylah Webb led the team in rebounds last year as a freshman, and she appeared to come back stronger and more poised than ever. Katiyah Parker, a point guard and team leader was another returning starter, ready for a strong senior season. Elena Flowers,…
L.C. Bird girls basketball is just one year removed from a 5A state finals appearance, and they are playing like a team that will do anything to return to the Siegel Center this year. After losing standouts Taja Cole (Louisville) and Tyra Shelton (Queens-Charlotte), the Skyhawks have done a great job of anchoring their team down around Angela Caraballo. She has been the driving force of their team this year with her talent and leadership. Coach Chevette Waller has nothing but praise for Caraballo. “She always knocks down big shots,” Waller said. “I can count on her whenever I put…
