Senior Alexis McCargo, a standout defender and most talented L.C. Bird girls’ soccer athlete, made her college decision last week. The Skyhawk will take her talents west to Rocky Mount and play for Ferrum College. “When I visited Ferrum, I felt like I was a part of their family,” McCargo said. “Ferrum has a very well organized program where the coaches want their student-athletes to succeed on and off the field.” McCargo reeled in Second Team All-Conference with 12 honors last year as defender for a L.C. Bird program that has struggled with building a winner at a school known…

A proud program, L.C. Bird girls’ basketball was victorious over Thomas Edison to play in their first state title game. While the first half was a roaring success for the Skyhawks, they would fall just short of the ultimate goal, losing to Princess Anne 71-65 in the 5A State Final in what perhaps was the best season in school history. “We came out strong in the first half,” said L.C. Bird coach Chevette Waller. “We didn’t take care of the basketball and made too many turnovers.” The Skyhawks came out of the gate in full flight, hitting their shots and…
It almost seemed like destiny. As things stood Thursday morning, both the Monacan Chiefs and Midlothian Trojans were one game away from playing for the state championship. The catch? If they won, they’d play each other- for the fifth time. With Midlothian’s dramatic win earlier in the day, Monacan followed suite and set up round five with a gut-it-out 58-57 victory over William Fleming this afternoon at the Siegel Center. In a game where it looked like a much quicker and more athletic team would run them into the ground, William Fleming charged back in the second half to make…
With last week’s Conference Championships both the L.C. Bird boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were assured spots in the 5A South Region tournament. Both figured to have excellent opportunities to win the two games needed to advance to state. While the boys fell in a double overtime thriller to Henrico last Wednesday, The Lady Skyhawks are two wins away from achieving their preseason goal of a state championship in All-American Taja Cole’s senior season. Picking up from last week’s Village News, the girls continued their run with a battle against 25-0 Highland Springs last Wednesday. The Springers and Skyhawks faced…
Playing for the best team in the Chesterfield area allows a lot of players to generate buzz. For L.C. Bird, there are so many players that can be the leading scorer every night. There’s the obvious in seniors Kenny Williams and C.J. Miles, who have led the team in scoring each of the last two years. Then there are the breakout players, like Charles Falden who is currently averaging 14 points per game after playing JV last year. What do they all have in common? They are often set up by sophomore point guard Johquin “Pinky” Wiley. He is affectionately…
Richard Legree Senior Forward Meadowbrook Legree, a 6-foot-6 swing man is one of the more under recruited players in the area, but it’s not because he doesn’t have game. His exposure levels were down this summer because he was unable to play AAU. Long and athletic, the senior is a part of a balanced Meadowbrook attack. The senior has filled in the team’s sixth man, is a good defender and has a good jump shot both in and out of transition. He’s a key piece in Meadowbrook’s 9-4 record thus far in 2014-2015. Stat line: 9.3 points per game, 3…
Kenny Williams III, L.C. Bird’s senior swingman, is a skilled basketball player. Williams is the newest Virginia Commonwealth University Ram, fulfilling his dream of attending the school after meeting head coach Shaka Smart in his freshman year. The Skyhawk is, by definition, a basketball player. It consumes his life. “I really don’t do much else, or have any hobbies,” said Williams. “I hang out with my family and friends.” For Kenny Williams Jr., who’s retired from the Navy, and Sherrie Pounds, a nurse, first came son Danny. Then, came Danielle, Dominic, JaMaar, Kenee’, Kenny, Kris and Autumn. Kenny was the…
L.C. Bird point guard Taja Cole is signed to the University of Louisville and will be a Cardinal next season. The point guard liked the upbeat tempo of their offense and her play style fits like a glove in that type of system. Like all athletes, there’s much more to Cole than hoops; she’s a budding entrepreneur to boot. The senior is already chasing a second dream and getting prepared for a life after basketball. “I just wanted to be different,” Cole explained. “I wear a lot of Jordan and Nike, but I wanted to do something different.” That’s right.…
Devin Morgan is known as a star on the basketball court, but his humble attitude and personality is what unites Matoaca’s basketball team and interests colleges in his abilities. Morgan has been playing basketball for as long as he can remember, starting out on his Fisher-Price basketball hoop and moving up from there. He’s gained an impressive reputation as a shooter and point guard, with colleges taking notice of his skills. “I just want to make sure it’s [college] the right fit. I want to go somewhere where I’m needed and somewhere where I’m wanted. With that being said, I…
