Andrew White III, a graduate of the Miller School in Charlottesville by way of Thomas Dale High School, made his NBA debut on Valentine’s Day for the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks took on the Detroit Pistons, and White surged, scoring 15 points in just 17 minutes. Overall, he has appeared in 15 games for Atlanta, averaging 4.5 points per contest while on a two-way contract. The Falling Creek Blackhawks 11-U basketball team won the Chesterfield Basketball League championship in the Minor PAC 10 division on March 3 with a 38-25 win over Ettrick. The team was coached by Andrew Lewis, who played at Thomas Dale High School in 1977-78 and is in the school’s Hall of Fame. The assistant coach was John Matthews and the statistician was John Sulimay. Lewis also coached at L.C. Bird for a number of years. L.C. Bird Girls L.C. Bird finished last season 17-10, making the 5A state tournament with one of the youngest rosters in the state of Virginia. They fell to Edison 61-51 in the first round, but they have much to build upon, and have much excitement surrounding the program. Coach Chevette Waller returns to captain the ship yet again. MEADOWBROOK BOYS So far in 2017, Meadowbrook has gotten to a 2-1 start, with victories over Prince George and Thomas Dale. Now in his sixth year as head coach, Jake Oliver will look to guide this team to dispel their playoff demons. Departed from the program are four seniors: Jordan Jeter, Johvanni Perkins, Tro’Man Pope, and Daequan Young. A talented guard, Jamon Battle, transferred to L.C. Bird. L.C. Bird basketball doesn’t rebuild, it reloads. After losing a considerable amount of talent from last year’s state championship team, the Skyhawks will now bring in a new crop of talent. One of those players will be rising senior Chris Ford. Colleges have begun to take notice of Ford and his 6-8 frame this summer. Former Longwood women’s basketball standout Eboni Gilliam has signed a contract to continue her basketball career in Spain, signing with Club Naticio Terrassa in the Spanish city of Terrassa. “Eboni has worked extremely hard for this opportunity,” said Longwood head coach Bill Reinson. “When we recruited her, she said that playing professionally overseas was something she wanted to accomplish. Eboni never lost sight of that goal. In addition to playing basketball, Eboni will enjoy Spain. It is a wonderful country with a terrific culture and warm, friendly people. Keeping up with the tradition of establishing a well-rounded girls’ basketball team, Coach Chevette Waller has announced dates for basketball camp at L.C. Bird High School. Open to all girls, ages six through 16, the camp will be held June 19 through June 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Friday. Delaware State’s backcourt received a huge boost earlier this week as guard Johquin Wiley decided to commit. The L.C. Bird guard averaged 10.5 points and 6.8 assist last season, as he led the Skyhawks to a state championship. His strong play over his high school career earned him offers from schools like Campbell, James Madison, Longwood, and Norfolk State, but ultimately it was Delaware State that got the VHSL 5A State Player of the Year. Brina Bentley, a 5-9 forward, has shown that hard work pays off over the course of time. “It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing that I have a home for the next four years,” she said. No matter the task, it seemed to be business as usual for L.C. Bird boys’ basketball during the 2016-17 season. Winning a state championship was no exception, as the Skyhawks defeated Bethel, 65-52, to earn the school’s first basketball title in workman like fashion. “We try to make everything as competitive as we can,” said L.C.
