Manchester 24, L.C. Bird 21 In the heavy mist of a cool, dreary October night, the “game of the week” match-up could not have been any better, it was a nail-biter to the very end. As both teams came into the game at 5-1, this was more than just a game for the better record; it was for bragging rights. Manchester started the game off slow. They had some three-and-outs early on, and L.C. Bird managed to draw first blood. The Lancers quickly answered with a touchdown pass by Wake Forest commit Brendon Clark. Later, Manchester scored in the fourth…

By Louis Harrison Dinwiddie 28, Thomas Dale 0 Defense wins games, which was the case Friday night for Dinwiddie. Thomas Dale 42, Matoaca 20 By Louis Harrison On a bright Friday night, the Thomas Dale Knights traveled to play one of their biggest rivals, the Matoaca Warriors. The Warriors came in looking to get revenge as they lost to the Knights last year and to Massaponax in a blowout last Friday. The Knights were led by their rush attack, as sophomore sensation Chris Tyree paced the team with 139 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Alongside Tyree were Dale’s two bruising backs in Collin Holmes, who also had 2 touchdowns and Elijah Burns (72 yards.) Not only did the offense prevail, but…

When people think about real football, they think about a cold, rainy, smash-mouth type of football game being played on a wet and muddy field. Well, Friday night at Thomas Dale’s Ed Karpus Field, there was an abundance of high school football aroma. Both L.C. Bird and Thomas Dale played what seemed to be just a running back show of power. The Knights won 36-6 after eight straight losses to the Skyhawks in their annual game. “This win means a lot to the community and to the kids,” said Thomas Dale coach Kevin Tucker. “We have wanted this one for…
While football players from the 804 have had a great summer, no school has benefited from those athletes more than the Naval Academy. Recently, Thomas Dale offensive guard Talvis Robinson became the third local athlete to pledge service, behind Benedictine running back Caleb Grimes and Glen Allen’s Jebril Murray. “I felt comfortable with the coaches and the campus and the other recruits,” said Robinson. Since his freshman season, Robinson has made headlines just for his size. As a junior, he’s 6-2 and 295 pounds; over the past two seasons his play as caught up. Initially thought of as another version…
Former L.C. Bird quarterback Terrence Ervin has transferred from Louisburg College to Johnson C. Smith University. There were many reasons as to why Ervin chose to play at the CIAA institution. “I have a great relationship with the head coach and I feel like it was the best fit for me,” said Ervin. While with Norfolk State his first year, Ervin would play all 12 games, with his best game coming against Hampton as he threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns. He would transfer the next season to Louisburg, where he would split time at quarterback. He would throw…
By ANDY BALDACCI Thomas Dale’s football program has made it a tradition to get athletes to the next level, especially from the defensive side of the ball. The next player to join that list might very well be rising senior Devonte Chandler. The 5-11, 218-pound linebacker has now garnered eight offers: Army, Navy, Morgan State, UVa-Wise, Elon, West Virginia Wesleyan, Saint Francis (Pa.), and William & Mary, with the latter two being the most recent. Last year, Chandler was a nightmare for opponents in the backfield as he tallied 132 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. His…
