In many cases, once an athlete gets their first scholarship offer, more are sure to come. Especially if they still have another full season to play. A pair of Meadowbrook football players have received their first invitation to play at the collegiate level. Dontez Braxton and Brandan Delaney have both received offers from UVA-Wise. Braxton, a 5-10, 165 pound defensive back, is a tough corner, and he had quite a junior season. In total he had 57 tackles, broke up 10 passes, made 5 tackles in the backfield, created a sack, and interception. Meadowbrook coach Adam Tiller expects some big…
Raising a child isn’t easy. But for John and Regina Bowen, things have been a tad more difficult. After years of cardiologist visits, their son, former Matoaca and Trinity Episcopal quarterback Blake Bowen, discovered that he needed emergency heart surgery last week — in a successful procedure called a catheter ablation — doctors fixed two electrical issues in Blake’s heart. “It was the worst six days in my entire life,” Regina Bowen said. “I cried more in those days than I have in my 44 years on earth.” Her husband agreed. “When you get a call about your child with…
Thomas Dale alum Darvin Taylor II has now been at Florida State for two years. While he was redshirted his first season and dealt with injuries in the offseason heading into and during the 2016-17 season, it appears that he’s turning a corner, one of health and growing success on the field. For one, he was named Florida State’s most improved defensive player after the team’s spring game. In an article on 247sports.com, he was applauded for his play in the game. Most importantly, he received praise from his coach, Jimbo Fisher, in a recent press conference. Fisher talked about…
By Thomas Dozier L.C. Bird has had its successes on the football field. Three straight 5A state championships isn’t just an accomplishment; it’s a feat. While the both the Skyhawks boys’ and girls’ basketball programs have had their share of successes, neither team has brought home a state title. The boys came within a razor-thin margin twice: in 2011 (I.C. Norcom) and 2016 (Potomac). The girls are perennial contenders in the conference, region and state; they fell to Princess Anne in the 2014 state championship game, and the 2017 squad packed with freshmen and sophmores, lost to Thomas Edison 59-51in…
Meadowbrook is used to putting players in college; Monarchs are littered all over the state at all levels, from junior colleges to Division I. There’s even one in the NFL: Morgan Moses of the Washington Redskins. Two more will join the college ranks: Dre Giles, a defensive and offensive lineman, committed to Campbell of the Big South and Jordan Jeter, a wide receiver, will take his talents to UVA-Wise. Both committed after visits this past weekend. Meadowbrook coach Adam Tiller weighed in on both of his recent pledges. “Campbell is just the right fit for Dre,” said Tiller. “Great academics…
It was the big game for little league football players last Saturday. Eight teams played beginning at 10 a.m. with the Minors in the Chesterfield Quarterback League Superbowl. The league is celebrating 60 years and is the oldest little league association in the state of Virginia. It was Scott Scorpions against Spring Run Huskies. Scott Minors hit the field with eight wins and zero losses and they were not about to lose the Superbowl game. Down to the last few minutes with the score 13 to 12 in Scorpions favor, No. 4, Shamari Earls made his third touchdown in the…
Highland Springs 34 L.C. Bird 20 By Josh Mathews As Highland Springs started its defense of the 5A state title, the team knew it would take a complete effort on both sides of the football. That’s what the Springers made against the visiting L.C. Bird. Senior quarterback Juwan Carter led the offense, passing for two touchdowns and running for two more, while the Highland Springs defense forced four second-half turnovers. The Springers toppled the Skyhawks 34-20 at Victor Kreiter Stadium Saturday afternoon. Highland Springs 34 L.C. Bird 20 “They [the defense] kept their heads in the game and didn’t get…
L.C. Bird 27 Hermitage 24 by Zach Long The No. 3 seed L.C. Bird traveled to No. 2 seed Hermitage Friday night for a second round showdown in the 5A South playoffs. The Skyhawks emerged victorious, winning 27-24. Hermitage seemed to hold a mental edge towards the end of the first half. Up 17-14, quarterback James Carney had already thrown two touchdowns to Nasir Hines. The junior backup QB held his own in his first start, with signal-caller Woody Winborn sidelined by injury. The Hermitage defense forced three straight punts as well, and L.C. Bird was struggling on offense. That…
