6A South #3 Thomas Dale 26, #6 Woodbridge 0 Going into the playoffs with three straight losses isn’t how coach Kevin Tucker drew up the last third of the season. But a 26-0 shutout victory for Thomas Dale over Woodbridge in the first round of the 6A South playoffs just might have been. Thomas Dale got started early as quarterback Matt Lawton hit Brian Bullock for a 15 yard touchdown pass. A blocked extra point made it 6-0, Knights. Thomas Dale added a second touchdown in the first quarter as Gabe McCollin, who rotates at the position on certain packages…
Matoaca 44, Thomas Dale 35 In a wild game, Matoaca defeated rival Thomas Dale 44-35 on their senior night and capped the program’s best season since 2006, finishing 7-3. A go-ahead field goal by Justin Dyke gave Dale the lead at 37-35 and running back Jamison Harrison, returning from a hand injury delivered the knockout blow on a scoring run with 1:36 to play. The Warriors came out swinging, and built a 24-7 lead just before the half. The beginning of the momentum shift began when Thomas Dale senior wideout Brian Bullock returned a punt 48 yards before the halftime…
1. L.C. Bird (10-0) The Skyhawks ran the table this year, finishing the regular season undefeated for the sixth time in seven years. The defense was, in a word, dominating. L.C. Bird’s defensive team allowed just 19 points all season. Just seven of those points were scored against the first team. Against the run game, they were dominant, allowing just 42 yards on the season. Cruising through the first half of the season which included playoff teams such as Meadowbrook, Thomas Dale, Manchester and Monacan, L.C. Bird defeated those teams by an average margin of about 33 points. Overall, the…
L.C. Bird 55, Huguenot 0 The Skyhawks rolled over the Huguenot Falcons again, 55-0. Huguenot has not scored on L.C. Bird since 2006, when they defeated the Skyhawks. J.B. Wright rushed for 145 yards and three scores, while Shedrick McCall ran for 116 yards and two scores. Jalen Elliott was 9-12 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing). Kier Townsend was the recipient of Elliott’s passing touchdown, and has hauled in a touchdown catch in five consecutive games. Defensively, Rayshard Ashby led the way with six tackles, four tackles for a loss, a sack and fumble recovery. Manell…
Kobe Bryant once said in a press conference – “Everything negative- pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.” For this year’s version of the Meadowbrook football team and its senior running back, Jace Miller, that statement holds a lot of weight. The Miller family is an athletic one. Jace’s older brother, Justin, starred for Meadowbrook in 2014 and is a redshirt freshman at Virginia Union. Their sister, Jazmine, was a standout track athlete for the Monarchs. Athletic challenges pale in comparison to the biggest challenge they have faced – one that through tragedy has brought them…
1. L.C. Bird (9-0) As everyone expected, the Skyhawks took care of Huguenot in convincing fashion, 55-0. The Falcons have not scored a point on L.C. Bird since 2006, as Tim Holmes, a friend and twitter follower of mine points out, George W. Bush was still in office. That Huguenot team defeated L.C. Bird at home that season, though. As far as the game goes, J.B. Wright rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns and now has rushed for 1602 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season. Shedrick McCall pitched in 116 yards and two touchdowns in mop-up time, while…
Meadowbrook 23, Thomas Dale 14 For the second straight week, Meadowbrook made the most of their opponent’s mistakes. This week, five special teams gaffs aided in a 23-14 victory over Thomas Dale. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead on the strength of a 53-yard touchdown pass from Michael Hodges to Jacquez Meadows and a recovered onside kick produced a one-yard run by running back Jordyn Hunter. The Knights fired back as junior quarterback Matthew Lawton completed a pair of 30 yard touchdown passes to Brian Bullock and Mariel Jennings, respectively. The second half was relatively quiet for both teams,…
Former Green Bay Packers fullback, Super Bowl XXXI champion and Thomas Dale graduate William “Boogie” Henderson visited Thomas Dale High School on October 23, and presented a commemorative Wilson Golden Football. The presentation was part of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll that celebrates high schools and communities that have contributed to Super Bowl history. The NFL Foundation provides the schools with a new character education curriculum and the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help support and grow their football programs. The NFL Foundation has invested $1 million towards the campaign. This is the…
1. L.C. Bird (8-0) The Skyhawks rolled over George Wythe. There’s not much to say other than that L.C. Bird will very likely be the top seed in both this poll, and the 5A South region, meaning they will host their playoff games as long as they win up until the state semi-finals. Running back J.B. Wright enjoyed another solid game with 126 yards and two touchdowns. The Skyhawks defense pitched it’s sixth shutout of the season and the first team offense has only allowed one touchdown (Cosby). L.C. Bird has Huguenot (1-8) and James River (3-5) left on the…
