Chemistry comes in different packages. As scientists mix chemicals together to create a reaction, athletes pour their blood, sweat and tears into a team to create a winning formula that leads them to a state championship. Two area defenses hope to be up to the task this year at L.C. Bird and Thomas Dale, and both are led by solid linebacker corps that – you guessed it – have great chemistry. L.C. BIRD Isaiah Moore walked onto the field for tryouts last year. As a young linebacker, he already knew he’d be behind then rising sophomore sensation Rayshard Ashby on…

1. L.C. Bird (6-0) In the misty, wet rain filled Thursday game with Monacan, it was L.C. Bird that prevailed. In a game marred with 11 turnovers, the Skyhawks turned their six turnovers into 36 points, while the Chiefs struggled to capitalize, only converting one of L.C. Bird’s turnovers into a points. Jalen Elliott came up big in the first half, connecting on touchdown passes to Kier Townsend and Kumonde Hines to set the tone, then J.B. Wright helped finish the game with a hard-earned 171 yards on 37 carries. Rayshard Ashby (12 tackles, sack, forced fumble) and Isaiah Moore…

1. L.C. Bird (5-0) As expected, the Skyhawks took care of Clover Hill, pitching their fourth shutout on defense. The Cavaliers were able to make some plays defensively, but were grossly overmatched. Running back J.B. Wright continued his outstanding season, rushing for a season high 234 yards while scoring twice. Shedrick McCall and Waymond Pate added rushing touchdowns. L.C. Bird’s defense continued to be impenetrable, as the first team hasn’t allowed any points all season. To date, the Skyhawks have allowed just one touchdown on the season, late in the fourth quarter to Thomas Dale. Their upcoming match-up with the…
Christopher Artis, MBK 6-3 305 OT Senior No Offers A big, physical blocker, Artis is imposing on a high school field and has a body that can easily translate to the college level. Howard University is very interested in Artis and dipped into the area last year and nabbed Monacan’s Isaiah Fludd to play on their line. Meadowbrook is no stranger to producing quality lineman, and Adam Tiller has a big time anchor in 2015. Artis has handled early assignments well against top tier teams in L.C. Bird, Hermitage and Highland Springs and should be considered a slam dunk to…
1. L.C. Bird (4-0) After a lackadaisical first half effort, the L.C. Bird Skyhawks woke up, scoring 28 points in the second half to put away Manchester 35-0. The Lancers won on a hail mary last year in week 10 of the season. Though dominant on defense, pitching their third shoutout of the season and just allowing a single touchdown to Thomas Dale in the fourth quarter, the Skyhawks are not without a chink in their armor. At times, the offense has struggled to produce for periods of time. That simply wasn’t the case of the second half, as J.B.…
Thomas Dale 42, Varina 7 A week after struggling, Thomas Dale’s offense woke up and in a big way as the Knights cruised to a 42-7 victory over Varina in what most thought would be a tightly contested game. Junior quarterback, Matt Lawton tossed two touchdown passes – one to Christian Faber and the other to Mariel Jennings. Thomas Dale employed several running backs during the evening and all produced solid results. Grabbing the headlines was junior Max Oxendine, the nephew of Dale alum and former NFL running back Ken Oxendine as he rushed for 103 yards and two scores…
Malik Johnson, the younger brother of Indiana guard Robert Johnson (L.C. Bird/Benedictine) and former Bird standout running back Yahkee, had quite a football game Friday night. Known for his basketball skills at point guard, Johnson also plays cornerback and running back for the Blue Ridge School. Friday in a 50-20 victory over Hargrave Military Academy he returned a kick for a touchdown, hauled in a touchdown catch and scored a touchdown on the ground. As if that wasn’t enough, he had two interceptions, two sacks and five tackles. The 5–9 senior has offers on the hardwood from Chattanooga, Louisiana-Monroe and…
