It’s been well documented that L.C. Bird High School’s boys track program has sustained success at a very high level, with the Skyhawks having won two consecutive indoor and outdoor championships. On a deep and talented roster, coach Adam Canning highlighted rising junior Jacob Plummer. Among his other accomplishments, Plummer won a state championship in the 3200 meters this indoor season and was a member of the championship 4×800-meter relay team. He has been chosen as the Village News boys track Athlete of the Year. “Jacob stepped up this season and became a newcomer to the state landscape of great…

Matoaca High School senior Chewon Kim was a big part of the Warriors’ dominance in tennis south of the river over the past few years. In 2019, Kim had a near-perfect 12-1 record and a 4.1 grade point average. For those performances, he has been named Village News boys tennis Player of the Year. “Chewon was by far the best player on our team,” coach Matt Ramirez said. “He’s potentially the best player Matoaca has ever had.” A captain his junior and senior seasons, Kim’s cool and calm attitude served him well on and off the tennis court. “Chewon has…

Thomas Dale High School’s boys soccer team experienced a renaissance of sorts in coach Griff Fowler’s third year at the helm after his father, Mark Fowler, handed him the reins. An appearance in the state tournament for the first time in years was fueled by forward Brayan Cedillo. For his performance, Cedillo was named Village News boys soccer Player of the Year. Though slight in stature compared to the average football player, Cedillo (5 feet 9 inches and 160 pounds) is speedy with great instincts and what coaches call a “nose for the ball.” A two-year varsity player, Cedillo ascended…

Four straight state championships don’t come without talent, and talent is rarely missed when it comes to college scholarships. L.C. Bird High School’s boys track team celebrated sending three athletes to the next level recently. Twins Jeremiah Hill and Josiah Hill are going to Hampton University, and Shahmique Crowell will head west to Longwood University. That’s three Division I scholarships for the program. The Hill twins, who have teamed up on just about everything in their lives, teamed up on state-championship-caliber 4×800-meter-relay teams together. They won the state championship during the 2019 indoor season. Then in the spring,…

A common comment on the San Antonio Spurs in recent times is that they played “boring” basketball. Fans might form that opinion because San Antonio is big on defense and fundamentals. True to form, San Antonio recently signed a defensive specialist Kenny Williams as a free agent. Williams, a graduate of L.C. Bird High School, is the third Chester-area player to sign as a free agent with an NBA team, joining Robert Johnson (L.C. Bird/Benedictine) and Andrew White III (Thomas Dale/Miller School). Johnson spent the 2018-19 season with the NBA G League’s Wisconsin Herd, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks.…

Want to go out with a bang your senior year? Try hitting .600. That’s why Thomas Dale High School’s softball utility player Madison Rice did. She is the Village News Player of the Year. The Knights made a run to the state tournament in 2018, Rice’s junior year, and as a senior she helped guide the team to a 15-5 record. The team battled through injuries and adversity this year, and Rice proved to be a most useful player. “Maddy had to play multiple positions this year,” coach Patrick Sweet said. “She started out at her normal position of shortstop…

Karson Jennings in action on the pitching mound. A big part of having a winning baseball team is pitching. Thankfully for Thomas Dale High School, they’ve had Karson Jennings on the hill. For his performance as staff ace, he is the Village News Player of the Year. After bursting on the scenes with a shutout of First Colonial in the state tournament as a junior, Jennings followed that up with an outstanding senior year. The 6-foot 4-inch hurler had a 7-2 record with a 2.29 ERA. His control was excellent. He only walked eight batters over 55 innings, but struck…

L.C. Bird High School has seen a constant stream of college interest in their athletes, and running back Ramon Brown may be making headlines for years to come. This week, he received an offer from the University of Virginia. “Brown is a gifted athlete, and he works hard,” coach Troy Taylor said. “He was able to carry the ball at tailback and start as a cornerback this year.” In his 11 games for the Skyhawks, he carried the ball 72 times for 631 yards, good for 8.8 yards per carry. Defensively, he played well and provided coverage against opposing wide…
