In a sport that’s been dominated locally by Thomas Dale and Matoaca high schools for years and in the region by Mills Godwin, Douglas Freeman and Glen Allen high schools, Meadowbrook High School’s girls soccer team showed tremendous strides this year with their first winning season: 8-7-1. A big reason for the Monarchs’ historic season was junior Joanne Torres, who is the Village News girls soccer Player of the Year. Torres ended up being the third best scorer in Class 5, Region B with 23 goals and four assists. She was named first team All-Region and All-Academic. She was one…

Curtis Reeves and Randy Wilson are pictured on a golf course. When two people meet for the first time it might be a coincidence, but when Randy Wilson and Curtis Reeves met, a better term might be “fate.” Wilson and Reeves met two years ago at a church fellowship called “Birdies and Boogies” at Chester’s Christian Life Church. The church establishes small group fellowship opportunities for people with common interests in order for members to get to know each other better. “Our church believes in fellowship,” Wilson said. “We develop friendships through these fellowship groups.” Wilson and Reeves became friends…

Tre Fowler-Davis warms up for Meadowbrook High School’s football team last year. (Twitter) Meadowbrook High School football had a rough season in head coach Chamont Thompson’s first year, but the Monarchs still managed to see athletes such as Paul Davis and Frank Howard go to the next level. Now, they’ve got a budding recruit on their hands in Tre Fowler-Davis. The rising junior recently attracted offers from Liberty and Notre Dame. Fowler-Davis doesn’t have a star rating, and he’s been completely under the radar. Why? He played most of the 2019 season on the junior varsity squad. At 6 feet,…

Jonathan Pope Thomas Dale High School lacrosse has seen steady growth since coach Paul Amos helped start the program in 2013. Having players like Jonathan Pope, who was named the 2019 Village News boys lacrosse Player of the Year, certainly helps the cause. This year, the Knights made their third regional semifinal appearance after a first-round victory over Riverbend. Pope, a senior, who was called “a complete two-way midfielder” by his coach, was a big part of the team’s success in their 9-6 campaign. “He leads by example,” Amos said. “He is one of the toughest kids that I have…

HernandezHinesKennedy In his first year at the helm of L.C. Bird High School’s baseball team, Jake Wiseman led the Skyhawks to a 10-10 record, which was their best season since 2009. A big part of that was three seniors – Shawn Hernandez, Jaelen Hines and Zack Kennedy – who recently signed to play in college. Hernandez will head to Marymount University in Arlington, Hines will suit up for Virginia Wesleyan University, and Kennedy is committed to Randolph-Macon College. A 5-foot 7-inch shortstop, Hernandez may have been small in stature but led the team with four home runs. Hines, according to…

Recent Thomas Dale High School graduate Lauren Zuskin was selected as the Village News girls tennis Player of the Year. Zuskin was a team leader for the Knights on the court and in the classroom, as she was the team’s top player and also finished in the top 20 of the 2019 graduating class. “Lauren is extremely positive,” coach Kara Watts said. “She maintained a high grade point average, a social life, was very involved with clubs at school and represented our team well.” On the court, Zuskin teamed with Myra Anne Martin on doubles. The duo formed what Watts…

Tyson Pledger (Twitter) The L.C. Bird High Skyhawks have another Division I-level recruit in their midst. Tyson Pledger, a 6-foot 2-inch, 210-pound defensive end-tight end picked up an offer from Delaware State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. A junior, Pledger was a captain for Troy Taylor and the Skyhawks last season. “He’s a good student and a great kid,” Taylor said. “He always shows up and always works hard.” Taylor has a tie to the Delaware State coaching staff in Mark James, the former head coach of Virginia Union, where Taylor was quarterback coach after his tenure at Meadowbrook…

Brayan Cedillo got a head of steam, made a brilliant run down the field and passed to Chris Kuda, who booted the ball in the back of the net. A jubilant celebration ensued. Thomas Dale High School had made it back to the state tournament with a dramatic overtime victory over Colonial Forge, 2-1.  “The lads did everything I could have asked of them,” coach Griff Fowler said. This win came on the heels of a 5-1 victory over Franklin County that saw Kuda, Garrett Graves, Carlos Padilla, Hawkins Adcock and Emmanuel Oyewole score goals.  Then came a matchup for…
