Matoaca boys’ soccer finished last season 8-6-2 under Jay Parker, who’s now the football coach. This will be Victor Malagisi’s first year at the helm. “Our system of training and play has changed from the past, and the players are responding positively to the new system being developed at Matoaca,” said Malagisi. Malagisi didn’t want to talk specifics on individuals, but said that senior goalkeeper Justin Almond will be taking over duties minding the net. “I know my players are poised to be successful and prepared to take on any challenge they are presented with,” said the first-year coach. “I…

Once not considered a competitive program, L.C. Bird High School’s boys soccer program developed and grew into one under Juan Chavez. The development and growth have continued under second-year head coach Bobby Clarke. This season, the Skyhawks will contend with the loss of eight starting seniors, highlighted by All-Conference and All-Region performer Kevin Medina. L.C. Bird will be very young in the net and on defense with a more experienced midfield and forward unit. Alejandro Compos is just a freshman, but is an experienced goalie with plenty of club soccer experience. Clarke called him a “very solid player” who “leads…
Coach Gabriel Hochstetler has built a boys soccer program at Meadowbrook High that’s been knocking at the door of the state tournament for the past several years. After a 10-6 mark and falling to Mills Godwin last season, he and the Monarchs hope to find a high-water mark this year despite a young roster. Meadowbrook lost three skilled seniors at each level: a defender, a midfielder and a striker. Penny Senior, Elvin Romero and Juan Menjivar have moved on, but the Monarchs still have talent to burn. Of note, Senior is working out with Randolph-Macon College, while Menjivar had a…
“If you don’t at first succeed, try, try again.” That adage is applicable to all aspects of life, but especially to Matoaca High School soccer forward Maiya Pencile in the Warriors’ 8-3 win over L.C. Bird last week. On her run to the goal, Pencile kicked the ball toward the back of the net and saw it deflect off the Skyhawks’ goalie. However, the 5-5 senior was able to control the rebound, kicking it over the goalie’s head for a goal. It was the 127th of her career, setting a Virginia High School League record for goals scored. “I knew…
Boys’ Player of the Year Juan Carlos Escobar, Senior, Meadowbrook As a junior in 2016, Escobar finished the season with 19 goals and Conference 12 Player of the Year honors. Improving upon his junior year would be a challenge, but he did just that. Escobar retained his title this year as 2017 Conference 12 Player of the Year. He played a crucial part in the Monarchs’ goal production and scored 28 times this season while helping his team to 16-2-1 record. Coach Gabriel Hochstetler loves Escobar’s effort to find goals night in and night out. “The biggest thing that stands…
It was a special day for Meadowbrook girls’ soccer this past Wednesday, as Adriana Rosales signed her National Letter of Intent to play at Randolph-Macon College. Rosales has been a key component for the Monarchs this year, scoring nine goals and adding four assists as a center midfielder. However, if you told Rosales shed be leading the Meadowbrook girls soccer team in the heart of the field two years ago, she’d pr obably give you a funny look. Believe it or not Rosales has only been playing soccer for about two years. Coach Joe Farrell didn’t even find out himself…
Two L.C. Bird athletes announced where they’d be going this coming fall after finishing their academic and athletic careers as Skyhawks. Walter Samayoa, center back on the soccer field, will be attending and playing at Ferrum University, while baseball’s Miles Burton, a catcher, will be headed to UVa-Wise. Samayoa was a big part of the L.C. Bird’s success as they made regionals last season. For his senior season, he opted to go to academy, playing for the Chesterfield Strikers. During the 2016-2017 season, he scored one goal as a free kick while dishing out five assists and posting four shutouts…
Girls Even as a sophomore, Maiya Pencile dominated the competition. The Matoaca striker tallied 30 goals and 14 assists this past season, earning Conference 12 player-of-the-year honors, and being named to first team all 5A South Region. More importantly, her team made regionals for the first time since 2011. Pencile’s scoring instinct has led her to two very prolific seasons to start off her high school career. Last season she broke the school record with 32 goals, and she followed that up with 30 more goals this year. Maiya is a clinical finisher, whose skill and finesse push the team…
CHESTER, Va. – Thomas Dale will be hosting their second annual Alumni Game this Saturday, June 4 at 5 p.m. This game is sponsored by the Fatboys and The Soccer Post, and it is a fundraiser for the charity work the Fatboys carry out. Thomas Dale coach Mark Fowler…
