Matoaca’s two-time defending state heavyweight champion Anthony Helm recently announced he will attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University this fall. Helm chose VT over The University of Virginia. Thomas Dale picked up four wins, only falling to Cosby and had five wrestlers go 5-0 or 4-1 on the day. Caleb Oberly (106), Angelo Scott (120), Blake Correa (126), Jealon Williams (138), and Chris Collins (152) were among the standouts. Scott, Correa and Collins were all unblemished. The Knights graduated the dominant Corey Leonard last year and were without two key combatants in Roderick “Main” Wilson (160) and D.J. Williams (195). National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Michael Moore rode off into the sunset on top. Fresh off back-to-back state champions, Moore retired from coaching. The Matoaca Warriors wrestling program reached a lofty goal set after last season ended. Saturday at Robinson High School, Matoaca repeated as 5A State Champions. The gradual improvement of a program has begun to bloom into a dynasty. “The first one was a history making one, we didn’t have one at the school,” Matoaca Wrestling Head Coach Michael Moore said. “We didn’t know if it was luck so we had to win another one to show everyone that it wasn’t just luck.” This year’s team excelled on both an individual and team basis. The Matoaca Warriors clinched their second consecutive Conference 12 Championship on Saturday. Neal Richards earned his second All-Academic honor and second Wrestler of the Year accolade in the first two years of Conference 12. For Matoaca, all things were right in the wrestling world.
