Area seniors are approaching the end of the first nine weeks of their final year in high school. While sophomore and junior classes were taking PSAT exams last Wednesday at Matoaca High School, the senior class had Senior Empowerment Day; attending forums and a social to discover opportunities for them after graduation. Bank of McKenney’s Power of Pink Challenge raised $2,660 last Friday for the Massey Cancer Center. A suggested $10 donation to add pink to their hair will be used locally to help cancer patients in Richmond and surrounding areas. The local salons donating their services were Pilo Arts in Colonial Heights, The Village Hair Studio in Matoaca and Jinny’s Family Hair Salon in Prince George. Former Green Bay Packers fullback, Super Bowl XXXI champion and Thomas Dale graduate William “Boogie” Henderson visited Thomas Dale High School on October 23, and presented a commemorative Wilson Golden Football. The presentation was part of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll that celebrates high schools and communities that have contributed to Super Bowl history. The NFL Foundation provides the schools with a new character education curriculum and the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help support and grow their football programs. This week, one of Thomas Dale’s best volleyball players ever will celebrate her last home game in maroon and grey. That is senior Sydney Frink. “She’s one of the best student athletes I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching,” said coach Aariane Hayes. “Sydney is a kid that’s gotten better every single year.” Frink, the Knights’ standout has firmly planted herself in the record books and the Lynchburg College committed player name may not be going anywhere for a long time. Matoaca High celebrated recently the school’s 52nd anniversary with homecoming festivities including crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. The senior class selected as their king and queen Justin Dyke and Taylor Thomas-Harris, two outstanding Matoaca student leaders. Justin is a varsity football and soccer player and senior class vice president.
