As Tropical Storm Erika makes its way up the east coast, are you ready? I am presently on the side of the world where these storms form. Though hurricane season runs from June 1- November 1, we seem to see some of the worst storms during this time of the year. Tropical systems in Virginia usually result in rain, wind or both. Tropical systems are usually packed with rain. The problem comes when systems stall, dumping large amounts of rain. Flash flooding becomes the problem in this scenario. Low lying areas are prone to flooding. Some homes and businesses will…
Birds of a feather flock together. That’s exactly what the L.C. Bird Skyhawks are trying to do in 2015, build a nest atop of the Conference 12 standings. So far, so good as both the boys and girls have started their season 5-0 as of press time. In recent years, L.C. Bird girls’ volleyball has grown into one of the more successful programs in the area. This season they are looking for their third straight region appearance and are gunning for another Conference 12 championship after winning one in 2013. “This year, I think we’re better off in a different…
L.C. Bird 35, Thomas Dale 7 In a contest marred with turnovers, the L.C. Bird Skyhawks took care of business, dispatching Thomas Dale in front of a near-capacity crowd at Ed Karpus Field. Defense was the name of the game for two reasons. First, the Skyhawks’ D had a spectacular performance, scoring three defensive touchdowns. Defensive lineman Chris Hayden and cornerback Kumonde Hines returned fumbles for touchdowns, while Jalen Elliott intercepted a pass and took it to the house for six. The Skyhawks led 28-0 at halftime, but the Knights defense was much more competitive than the score showed. L.C.…
Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I found something at the local Wal-Mart the other day that brought back many old memories. Let’s see if you can guess what I am talking about. It came in a cardboard box with a handle; was yellow and red, had animals pictured on its side and was made by Nabisco. I am sure the older readers have guessed this by now.It was the old Barnum’s Animals crackers. They were cut in the shape of various wild animals packaged in a circus wagon carton, and it was always fun…
1. L.C. Bird (2-0) Defense wins championships. If it’s any indicator so far, the Skyhawks are headed for that fourth straight state title. After holding Meadowbrook to -12 total yards in week zero, L.C. Bird’s defense outscored their offense in the Battle of Chester. Kumonde Hines and Chris Hayden returned fumbles for touchdowns and Jalen Elliott had a pick six as the Skyhawks cruised to improve to 2-0. Speedy running back J.B. Wright had his second consecutive week of rushing for nearly 200 yards and Shedrick McCall (6-3, 220) is an excellent change of pace back, averaging about 90 yards…
There was a group of new kids on the block in the gold bracket at the Richmond Volleyball Club showcase this weekend: the Monacan Chiefs. The Richmond Volleyball Club’s showcase tournament is the biggest volleyball event in the area with 18 boys teams that came to play for two days. Monacan burst onto the scene with a strong showing, upsetting Atlee to place fifth overall. The gold bracket included volleyball powers such as Princess Anne, Mills Godwin, Maury and Deep Run. “We’re going to keep working hard in practice,” said senior Garrett Carson. “I think these guys like winning so…
To be the best, you have to beat the best. Colonial Heights did that on Monday night, defeating top-ranked and defending state champion Midlothian 3-1. “We know they are a good team,” said Colonial Heights all-state hitter Noah Murdock. “We could have been scared starting the season with them, but we played them well.” However, this time, it was a case of the teacher beating the student but it has not always been that one-sided. Both sides have scored decisive victories. It all began 30 years ago when Colonial Heights coach Mark Lee and Midlothian coach Randy Cox were playing on opposite…
The 42nd rendition of the Battle of Chester takes place this Friday at Ed Karpus Field on the campus of Thomas Dale as the Knights take on the L.C. Bird Skyhawks. Despite the Skyhawks’ recent dominance over the Knights’ (and everyone else) last year’s game was a close call for L.C. Bird as quarterback Jalen Elliott hurled a hail mary to the end zone to Daijaune Dorsey to give the Skyhawks a 20-15 victory in the most dramatic of ways. The rivalry has been restored. Pre-sale tickets are available between 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday at the…
As part of Governor Terry McAuliffe’s education round table, 16 Chesterfield County teachers were given the opportunity to address the governor, directly, on Monday with recommendations for Virginia’s education system. The first of an eight stop tour around Virginia, the Bellwood roundtable focused heavily on the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. Under the McAuliffe administration, Virginia has eliminated five of the 34 tests which is well above the national minimum of 17. Teachers made several recommendations for the SOLs including providing more and fairer prompts for the writing tests and making the test shorter because students become fatigued. The governor…
