Imagine that you need some exercise but find the weight room at the gym, with the buff ladies and the hulking men, intimidating. Sometimes, it is just the need to be healthy and know that one is taking care of “body business.” Many find water aerobics is an answer that helps them take care of business. Water is kind to the joints and helps participants build a strong core and is an exercise many find easy to do. The Water Aerobics group at the Chester YMCA has a team of professionals that have dedicated their time and energy to years…

The Virginia State Police (VPS) EMS Med-Flight program, was brainstormed by Chesterfield Fire and EMS Chief Bob Eanes (now retired) and former Governor Gerald Baliles. The helicopters, with a staff of brave pilots, paramedics and nurses have saved thousands of lives since its inception in 1984. The helicopter originally was based at Fire Station 14 on West Hundred Road, stored in the fire station bay. When dispatched to an emergency, it was wheeled out on a platform and was flown to the call for help. Today, the Med-Flight program is still going strong. Med-Flight is housed at the Chesterfield County…
L.C. Bird 31, Meadowbrook 0 The three-time defending state champions dominated the Monarchs from the start in what was a rocky debut for first year head coach Adam Tiller. L.C. MATOACA FIELD HOCKEY Under a new head coach in Christina Setters, the Matoaca Warriors will look to continue a run of great play and postseason appearances. The 2014 season culminated in a Conference 12 Championship and a first round upset of Prince George, who was 14-1 coming into the contest. Despite falling to Atlee 4-1 in the second round of the 5A South Region Tournament, the Warriors had quite a season. Graduating a host of seniors, including 5A Second Team All-State forward Jackie Cheely (Virginia Wesleyan), standout goalie Miranda Childers (Queens University-Charlotte), and midfielder/defenders Megan and Danielle Radigan, the Warriors…
MATOACA GOLF Two seasons removed from a 5A State Championship, Matoaca golf is set to be a contender again this year, posting an 11-2 record with their losses coming at the hands of top competition in Deep Run and Mills Godwin. “We are not as deep as last year,” said coach John Hall. “But we have a great confidence in our top four.” Hall has a strong top three, and three more that round out a formidable line-up. Leading the way is a pair of upperclassmen in Paul Harris (senior) and Will Creekmore (junior). Both have medaled this year, most…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. If I have my calculations right this article should be ready for the Labor Day issue and again maybe not. Of late I have not had a lot of success in making those special dates…sometimes early… sometimes late; as Max would say… looking down from above… “You dumb-dumb…you missed it again!” Of course in his loving but mocking way. It is really hard to believe that Labor Day is already here…it seems just like yesterday when I took Max into the vet for the last time right after the…
I was feeling especially spiritual last week when I was riding through Chester. Something in the distance looked like angels wings. No it was Bozo the Clown’s bald head with hair splayed on each side. I thought I was losing it until, getting close enough to figure it out, I realized it was a willow oak tree that looked as if it were a bust carved like Mickey Mouse in Disneyland. I was so fixated on the carved tree that I almost ran into a sign that read “MEN WORKING.” The bucket truck and the limb grinder – it is…

Home building is not always boom or bust. But this year, Chesterfield home-building permits for new houses are not keeping pace with last year. New permits in July this year were up over July of last year – 128 to 112 respectively. But analyzing the year-to-date results, the county numbers look a bit bleak. In 2015 through July the building inspection department reported 755 building permits issued. In 2014 the number of permits outpaced this year by 30 percent – 1,013. Building permits on a yearly basis though July was lower in 2015 than 2014, but there were 979 permits…
