Virginia  Arandall is concerned that a bed and breakfast and special events venue could be approved in her neighborhood. But she is not alone. Other residents in her neighborhood, off Hopkins Road in the in Meadowbrook area, are also concerned. Residents of the Windy Oaks Lane/Sunbeam Road neighborhood are supportive of the owners of the Edgewood House winning historic designation and the use of the house as a bed and breakfast, but it is the special events operation the group of neighbors opposes. “We’re not so upset about the concept, it’s just the special events part that they are trying…

As I scrolled through Facebook on our rainy Saturday, I was very disturbed by a video that was posted. This video was taken in the Food Lion parking lot on Jefferson Davis Highway. The video showed a scene that will take many straight back to the days of the Civil Rights Movement: trucks, over one hundred, proudly waving their Confederate flags were parked in an effort to – do what exactly I am not sure. Instigate, intimidate, I’m not sure the young people even understood why they were there. It was shocking and horrifying to say the least. I was…

To the Editor: As I get older, I find myself getting crankier and crankier. Chris Weigard’s recent column on Confederate flags and statues fed this condition. He says, stop celebrating Confederate Heritage Month, and call it Civil War Heritage Month. Well, apparently it isokay to have Black History Month and LGBT Month, which annoy many people, but hey, let us compromise. Instead of either Confederate Month or Civil War Heritage Month, how about calling it the War of Northern Aggression Month? And, yes, it is called the War of Northern Aggression for a reason. The North invaded the South to…

In last week’s column, I explored the lingering legacy of the Civil War in terms of flags, statues and hurt feelings.   In our local and national discourse, we sometimes lose perspective on any topic that engages our emotions. There is a danger of losing track of timeliness in our debates: which topics belong to yesterday, today, or tomorrow? The Confederate battle flag now looks like an item of yesterday’s news.  It is separated from the present by 100 years of Jim Crow plus 50 years of growing equality for African Americans. It can linger for decades or centuries in yards…

After my retirement from the fire service, I let my paramedic certification expire. I guess that many believe “once a paramedic, nurse or doctor, always one.” Many of my immediate, extended and church family still come to me when an injury or illness occurs. Last week was no exception, as one of the children had hit her foot on a tree, swinging in one of the swings attached to that tree. It had happened prior to my arrival in West Virginia, but she was still having issues with it. I was asked if I would look at it and give…
