Chester resident Anne Canipe boarded a plane to San Francisco on Friday beginning her trek around the world.  Well, almost. Canipe loves to travel and she will be clocking a lot of air miles this summer thanks to a $12,000 grant awarded to her from the R.E.B. Award for Teaching Excellence. This was her second R.E. B. award. The foundation allows past winners to become eligible at the beginning of the sixth year…

As it continues to work on filling the gap of the “Moving Forward… the Comprehensive Plan for Chesterfield,” which includes smaller area plans, the Chesterfield County Planning Department planners are drafting the bicycles and trails facility plan, a Phase II implementation. The draft Bikeways & Trails plan is only an advisory plan and according to planners, is only a guide for future development of the facilities. The intent of the project is to provide the Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission, Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors with recommendations regarding the plan, along with implementing ordinances and other tools as…

Bike and walking trails were part of a sales pitch for Hallsley, an upscale development with homes starting at $400,000. With a number of Chesterfield residents lining up to make comments at the planning commission last week, there were enough stating there were concerns with the trail running near their property. Crime and devaluation of their property was a common comment, while others endorsed the draft plan with enthusiasm. With real estate companies and developers touting biking and walking trails, as communities work to put in place bike lanes, it’s obvious that these amenities actually increase the value of homes.…

The guest speaker was Dr. Ivan Perkinson, twin brother of Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson of Richmond. Ivan’s doctorate is from a seminary, while his twin’s is in dentistry. Ivan was an absolute delight and shared his life story and art with the Lions and their guests. Ivan retired twice, first…

The intent of my column is similar to the cooperative extension service, to share with you land-grant university information: information that can improve your landscape, reduce pests and yes, cause tomato envy at the next family picnic. I will also pass along dos and don’ts based on my successful and not-so successful endeavors. It is now late June, but it is not too…

Otitis simply means an inflammation of the ear.  An inflamed ear canal is called otitis externa.  The canal ends at the eardrum.  Inflammation beyond the eardrum, in the middle ear, is called otitis media.  Otitis media is the infection that plagues many younger children and in a number of…
