W e got home from West Virginia the Friday after Thanksgiving. We unpacked the truck and settled in for the evening. The only problem was that my wife said that it felt cooler than normal in the house. I went to the thermostat and saw that it indicated that the auxiliary heat was running, but the outside unit was not running. The thermostat also read 64 degrees, though it was set to 68 degrees. I shut everything off, allowing the system to reset. The system started up, but quickly began to make a sound that we had not heard before.…

The boys’ basketball team only lost four players due to graduation and were able to bring back most of the unit. Meadowbrook coach Jacob Oliver has a great foundation building at the Chesterfield County school and they should only improve each year to come. This year, the Monarchs will come out bigger and stronger then ever. Projected Starting 5 G Tre’Man Pope, Senior, 6-1 G Jamon Battle, Sophomore, 6-3 G Daequan Young,…

Kylon Lewis, Class of 2021, point guard from Elizabeth Davis Middle School, played his lights out this summer during his AAU season averaging 22.6 points per game and 4.2 assist. The start of his Middle School season has been no different, so far Lewis leads the Davis Ravens in scoring, and third in the county already, as of right now he is living up to everyone’s expectations. The athletic slasher from Chester will be attending Thomas Dale High School next year and by far should be a contributor to the varsity team as a ninth-grader. Lewis is starting off great…

Hello and welcome back to the festive world of the Dogpound. Christmas is rapidly approaching, and I can tell because my mailbox is overflowing with catalogs. Even with the all of the online purchases, companies are still eager to get your attention at home and at the store. So far that is not really working for me…I have only gotten two things done so far. One, I did get my Christmas cards out, including that cute picture of me all decked out in my Ohio State University clothes, coffee mug, and blanket in front of the fireplace. Of course, one…

By L. Fausz Today, Dec. 7, 2016, is the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. On this day in 1941, at approximately 8 a.m. Hawaii time, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,300 Americans. “It was a Sunday,” said Chesterfield County resident Sidney Morris Sings. “We had no radio or telephone at home. I came over to the service station [where I worked] and I heard the news on the radio. I boogied home as fast as I could; I thought they were coming after us.” The following account if…

Members of the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society have started creating new exhibits for use in the baggage room of that museum. The Board of Directors and the Museum Committe have designed several new, light-weight display panels to replace old, heavy, plywood folding screen type panels. Made by Richmond Signscapes and museum member Jennifer Tompkins, the new panels feature a background of “Southern Railway green” with the SR logo at the bottom in yellow. Lighter, more easily moved displays are desirable because the displays need to be moved to the side when the museum is rented…

The purpose of the program was to help students internalize the importance of their choices to drive safely and prevent crashes. The 90-minute presentation will be followed with six weeks of interactive…

As I travel around, I know it’s the holiday season. The Salvation Army bell ringers fill the air, parking lots are full, and parents are saying “I’m gonna tell Santa if you don’t be good.” Thankfully, I have matured past, or at least I am physically past, that last part. Another sign of the season is all the Christmas plants that are for sale in the stores. Garden centers, grocery stores, florists, and even department stores have plants just waiting to brighten someone’s home. Here are a few plants that make great gifts and tips on how to keep them…
