When Virginia’s General Assembly convenes, beginning on draft Jan. 17, 2017, Chesterfield County will not be sitting on its laurels waiting to see what happens. The Board of Supervisors last week considered the draft legislation program. Each year, Chesterfield sends a representative to the General Assembly to support or oppose particular legislation. Education has always been a priority for the county, and this year, maintaining K-12 funding and flexibility in the use of the funds. Meadowbrook High School’s Academy for Digital Entrepreneurship (MADE) sent two teams of five sophomores to compete in the Virginia Entrepreneurial Challenge Oct. 15-16 at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Business. The challenge was a weekend-long entrepreneurship boot camp for high school juniors and seniors. “The students at the MADE program continue to impress me,” said John Erbach, school board member for Dale District. “In terms of their innovation and business skills, they are far ahead of even many college students. Pictured is the home place of Miss Lucy Corr, former Director of Chesterfield County’s Social Services Department located on Lori Road just past the county administration building. Corr is remembered for starting a nursing home that reflected the strong family values embedded in the Chesterfield County community. That meant taking care of people who did not have the means to care for themselves. Within four years, she had spearheaded the effort to build a first-class nursing home in Chesterfield in 1970, the first of its kind in the County. With new leadership at the school division level, the Chesterfield County School Board and Superintendent have refocused attention on academic performance at Falling Creek Middle School and Ettrick Elementary School this school year. In an effort to sustain and improve on current three-year trends that show student achievement growth, both schools have been provided with additional staffing and technology support in an effort to meet Virginia’s academic accountability benchmarks. This year’s parade theme is “Christmas Movies.” The parade will take place Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. It will begin at the Chester YMCA and end at Harrowgate Road.
