Idon’t know about you, but I’m exhausted. I’m tired of debates, Twitter, the media, and this election. I will turn 35 on Election Day this year. In the past I have worked the polls, happily handing out information to those seeking it and enjoying being a part of our democracy. I will not be doing that this year. I will go and cast my vote hoping that there will not be any ugliness at the polls. I will go holding my breath, that I will not see any of the behavior that has been so prevalent over the past six…

By Danielle Ozbat Christmas Mothers from past and present gathered at the historic Magnolia Grange museum house last Tuesday to announce Deborah Koller as this year’s Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother. Koller – who holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in microbiology and a doctorate in molecular genetics – has been with the Christmas Mother committee for four years and is honored to be chosen. “It’s an honor, a little humbling [and] I just hope I can serve the organization well,” Koller said. “We sort of  work as the interface … between the organization and the public, letting…

M y wife and I are finishing up a trip to Gloucester, Mass., and Bar Harbor, Maine. We will start for home tomorrow. Choices of travel could be plane, train, boat, bus or automobile; our choice is pickup truck. This being the case, the fastest route will take 12 hours 40 minutes, per Google Maps. The only problem with this route is I-95, which includes a ride around Boston and a skirting of New York City. This was no fun coming north, so we are considering a more western track south, meeting up with I-81. This will mean an additional…

Chesterfield County’s fire protection system now ranks among the top 3 percent nationwide following a recent evaluation by the Insurance Services Office. The Public Protection Classification rating assigned by the ISO improved from a Class 3/9 to a Class 2/2Y. The county’s fire protection system previously ranked among the nation’s top 10 percent. The new rating will take effect Dec. 1, 2016, and could mean potentially lower insurance costs for property owners. The Insurance Services Office is an independent organization that serves insurance companies across the U.S. by providing helpful information about risk. An important area scored by the ISO…

To the Editor: Regarding November 8, I reject the recent letter you printed which suggested Trump as the safer choice. Ignoring his recent sexual harassment accusations, Trump has made policy proposals that are nonsensical. He has a long history of portraying climate change as a hoax, and being actively hostile towards renewable energy. He also proposes deep tax cuts for all American taxpayers, including billionaires such as himself. This would deepen our national debt from the current 19 trillion to around 24 trillion within ten years. Hillary Cinton offers moderate, sensible, long term policies in both these areas. We need…

James “Jim” M. Holland, CPA, has been elected as the chair of the Virginia Board of Accountancy’s Standard-Setting Advisory Committee. Holland was appointed by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe in July 2016. He also is the Dale District representative on the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors. The Virginia Board of Accountancy (VBOA) supports the accounting profession not only in the Commonwealth, but on the national level as well. Current and previous board members, as well as the VBOA Executive Director, serve on committees and roles with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

By Becky Robinette Wright The journey has been long and difficult for a piece of steel that has seen better days. The steel, once a part of a tall, strong structure in New York called the World Trade Center, fought its battle on Sept. 11, 2001, and, unable to withstand the attack, burned, crumbled, and fell. This piece, one of several shared across the nation to serve in other memorials, found its place of honor at the Enon Public Safety Training Center in a special ceremony Oct. 13. With it, comes a reminder and a tribute to those died on…

The winds were brisk Oct. 9, but so was the influx of visitors to Enon Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Open House event. The tempting smell of grilled hot dogs and freshly popped corn filled the air. Toe tapping songs could be heard from the fire station bay as Bustin’ Loose played a wide variety of songs, such as Margaritaville, Footloose, and Rocky Top. People could be seen dancing as the band played on. Youngsters who dreamed of one day being a firefighter or driving a fire truck had the chance to explore fire engines, a tanker, a fire boat from…

CHESTER – To develop the skills and knowledge needed for careers in electrical engineering technology, hands-on training using industry-standard controls is vital. Now, thanks to a $40,000 gift from Dominion Resources, John Tyler Community College (JTCC) is able to offer its students even more opportunities to learn on state-of-the-art equipment. Through the grant, the College acquired new equipment that works in tandem with existing lab equipment, enriching students’ experiences as they study motors, electrical control systems, programmable controllers, and advanced programmable logic controls. “You can show this in a book or a PowerPoint, and you can learn from that,” says…
